No Contested Races For County, Assembly Posts

The deadline for filing nomination papers for several county and legislative offices was 5 p.m. Monday, June 2.

Marinette County offices up for election are sheriff, coroner and clerk of circuit court. County Clerk Kathy Brandt reported filing nomination papers were incumbents Sheriff Jerry Sauve and Coroner George Smith who have no opposition for re-election to four year terms.

The only candidate to file for the post of Clerk of Courts was Sheila Dudka of Peshtigo who currently serves in the office of the Clerk of Courts. The incumbent, Linda L. Dumke-Marquardt is retiring.

The three positions were the only ones up for election this year on the county level. As a result, a primary election will not be required on Tuesday, Aug. 12 and the general election will be on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

On the legislative side, there were two Assembly Posts up for election involving portions of Marinette County. They were District 36 and District 39. Candidates for the positions filed nomination papers with the State Accountability Board in Madison.

Assembly District 36 Representative Jeffrey Mursau (R-Crivitz) filed for re-election and was the only candidate. The District is comprised of that portion of Marinette County from the Town of Porterfield north to Niagara and northern portions of Oconto County and Forest County.

Assembly District 89 Representative John Nygren (R-Marinette) filed for re-election and was the only candidate. The District is comprised of that portion of Marinette County from the City of Marinette south to include the City of Peshtigo and Towns of Grover and Pound. Also that portion of Oconto County from Little River, City of Oconto and Towns of Oconto, Stiles, Abrams, Pensaukee, Little Suamico, Suamico and Howard in Brown County.

Primary elections will be held Tuesday, Aug. 12, for state offices on both the Republican and Democratic tickets. They are governor, where Gov. Scott Walker is challenged by Steve R. Evans for for the Republican nomination. On the Democratic ticket the four candidates who seek their party nomination for Governor are Mary Burke, Madison; Brett Hulsey, Madison; Marcia Mercedes Perkins, Milwaukee and Hariprasad Trivedi, Brookfield.

The top vote getters in each party will face off in the general election on Nov. 4 against six other different party candidates which include Libertarian, Peoples, People of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Pirate Party, Wisconsin Tea Party and Advancing a Sustainable Wisconsin.

Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch is unopposed for the Republican nomination. Two Democrats seeking the office are Mary Jo Walters, Madison and John Lehman, Racine with the winner on Aug. 12 facing off against Kleefisch.

Seeking the office of attorney general are five candidates. Only Republican, Brad Schimel, Waukesha is unopposed. The three Democratic candidates seeking their party nomination are Susan V. Happ, Jefferson; Ismael Ozane, Madison; and Jon Richards, Milwaukee with the winner facing Schimel on Nov. 4. The incumbent J.B. Van Hollen, Republican did not seek re-election.

For the office of secretary of state Doug La Follette seeks re-election on the Democratic ticket and is unopposed. Four Republicans who are seeking their party nomination for the right to oppose LaFollette are Gary Bies, Sister Bay; Rohn W. Bishop, Waupun; Julian Bradley, LaCrosse and Bill Folk, Racine.

There are contested races in both the Republican and Democratic parties to be their party nominee for state treasurer as the incumbent Kurt W. Schuller is not seeking re-election. Seeking the Republican nomination are Matt Adamczyk, Wauwatosa; Scott Feldt, Janesville, and Randall Melchert. Seeking the Democratic nomination are Dan Bohrod, Madison; Dave Leeper, Madison; David Sartori, Cudahy and Brandon White, Madison. The top vote getter from each party will face off Nov. 4.

For the 8th District U.S. Representative incumbent Reid J. Ribble, Sherwood is unopposed for the Republican nomination. Seeking the Democratic nomination is Ron Gruett, Chilton.

The Government Accountability Board will meet Wednesday, June 10, to certify the final list of candidates for the Aug. 12 primary.
