Area Runners Shine At Triathlon Event
Temperatures hovering around 70 degrees greeted triathletes and runners at the 9th annual Green Bay Triathlon put on by DuTriRun on Sunday, June 1. Area athletes had numerous events to challenge themselves with an Olympic Distance Individual Triathlon, Olympic Relay, Sprint Distance Individual Triathlon, Sprint Relay, and 5K/10K running races. Besides a temporary soaking of rain prior to the start of the events, the weather cooperated and the sun even made a welcome appearance. Along with participants having a great time and many setting new personal bests, several area athletes earned age group awards.
The Olympic Distance triathlon consisted of a 800 meter swim followed by a 30 mile bike ride and finished with a 10K (6.2 mile) run. Andrew Witt of Oconto Falls posted the top area time finishing the course in 2 hours and 37 minutes, Angie Matykowski of Peshtigo seized a place on the podium finishing third overall in the womens race while also winning first in the 45-49 age group with her time of 2:41, Ann Senn of Oconto Falls also was first in the 40-44 age group in 2:49.
A total of 119 individuals completed the Individual Olympic Distance Triathlon while in the Olympic Distance Relay the Chick Stars team with member Lori Witt captured third in the relay.
The Sprint Distance triathlon consisted of a 400 meter swim followed by a 17.5 mile bike ride and finished with a 5K (3.1 mile) run. Brian Cleven of Marinette raced to a fifth place overall finish of the 327 participants in a time of 1:09 and also captured first in the male 25-29 age group. Tom Leow of Marinette cruised to a 22nd overall finish in 1:19 minutes and won the 45-49 age group, Brynn Larsen of Oconto Falls placed third in the female 20-24 age group in 1:34 while Tom Schroepfer of Marinette notched a first place time of 1:38 in the 65-69 age group.
Other successful individual sprint distance triathlon finishers included Ed Rowe of Marinette, Kelly Strasser of Niagara, John Williquette of Peshtigo, Nikki Leow of Marinette, Telly Villas of Menominee, Thomas Belongia of Oconto, and former area resident Mark Rasner.
Team Zoom of Oconto Falls consisting of Michelle Vine and Ashley Ziegler won the Female Sprint Distance Relay finishing second of the 7 Sprint teams. In the running races, Joe Kingsley of Oconto captured first in the male 30-34 age group in the 5K event, and former Marinette resident Kris Stolpa placed first in the male 55-59 age group in the 10K event.
Upcoming running and multisport events include the Bellin 10K on June 14 in Green Bay, the High Cliff Sprint and Half Ironman Triathlon at High Cliff State Park also on June 14, and the Jim Hodge Memorial 5K and 10K in Menominee on June 21.
