Marinette Legion Begins With A Split

Marinette Legion began the 2014 season with a split of 4 games. Marinette whipped White Lake 12-0 Friday as Kiefer Powers hurled a two-hitter, dropped a doubleheader to DePere Saturday afternoon 4-3 and 5-1 before getting back on track with a 10-6 win over Peshtigo Tuesday,

Now 2-2 on the young season, Marinette will play 4 games during the Father’s Day tournament in Menominee over the weekend.

On Saturday Marinette goes up against DePere at 12:30pm and Menominee 6:30pm while meeting the Green Bay Shockers at noon Sunday. A second game on Sunday will be seeded based on the number of wins.

A pair of games against Oconto have been postponed as Blue Devils qualified for the WIAA state baseball tournament.

Post 39 Pounds

White Lake 12-0

What a fifth inning it was for the Marinette Legion crew Friday in White Lake.

Up 3-0 and looking to make something happen with two outs on the board in the fifth, Marinette 's Derek Klegin took first base on a walk.

Then came the pre-Fourth of July fireworks.

From the perspective of the White Lake dugout, it must have looked like a nightmare as Nate Kallestad, Jake Sawinski and Kiefer Powers uncorked back-to-back-to-back triples. Blake Margis and Alex Stodola reached on walks and then Margis came across on a series of wild pitches from the White Lake pitcher to cap a six-run fifth inning as they cruised to the 12-0 victory.

Marinette 's Kiefer Powers had a brilliant performance on the mound to go along with some nice hitting on offense. The Post 39 starter gave up a mere two hits along with two walks while striking out six batters on his way the complete-game victory.

Tough Twin Loss

For Marinette Sat.

They turned in some solid innings and gave DePere a close first game but the Marinette Legion gang ended up dropping both games of their Saturday doubleheader against the Panthers, 4-3 and 5-1.

Things looked good for Marinette early in the opener as Derek Klegin and Nate Kallestad both reached safely before Jake Sawinski 's groundout to second brought in Klegin, where scored shortly after on a wild pitch. Kiefer Powers lifted a sac fly later in the inning to plate Kallestad.

After tying things up with an equally productive half of the second frame, the Panthers took the lead in the fifth as a wild pitch brought a runner in from third base. Marinette kept it interesting by scoring in the seventh to tie things up as Kevin Konyn tallied a clutch leadoff single and then scored later in the inning on yet another errant play from the mound, this time a misplaced pickoff throw.

Extra-inning action saw DePere wrap it up with a dramatic, ninth inning two-out triple from Emmett Kulick. Kulick, on third with two outs down, trotted easily across home plate moments later on, of all things, a wild pitch.

The second game of the day started with some dramatic offense from DePere as Connor Rutherford cranked a solo homer in the first inning to get things going for the visiting team. The Panthers would wrap up their scoring for the day in the second frame by plating four unearned runs off of the Post 39 defense and pitcher Alex Gressel.

Marinette got its offense kick started in the fifth. Alex Nemetz led things off with a well-placed double to left field before coming across off another double from Klegin.

Marinette Turns Back

Peshtigo In 10-6 Win

Combining 10 walks with 6 hits, Marinette rallied to claim a 10-6 North Division win over visiting Peshtigo (1-1) Tuesday.

Peshtigo jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead as Trevor Bero and Matt Zeske lashed singles while Austin Marquardt drew a walk. Marcus Sharkey sent one run with a fielder’s choice grounder while free passes to Darius Dohl and Matt Borkovec plated the other tally.

Peshtigo’s lead grew to 5-0 in the third inning on three hits. Borkovec singled with one out, Jacob Bloch walked before Bero added a RBI single. An error and run scoring single by Austin Marquardt capped the rally.

Starting pitcher Jordan Berth ran into trouble in the third inning walking Derek Klegin and Jacob Sawinski while beaning Nathan Kallestad resulting in two runs.

Marinette pushed across 4 runs in the fourth to go up 6-5 as Austin Wright, Klegin and Sawinski (2 RBI) lashed singles.

Four insurance tallies were plated in the sixth on 4 walks, single by Klegin and three-run triple off the bat of Kiefer Powers.

Alex Stodola started for Marinette and lasted 2 2/3 innings before giving way to Sawinski, who collected the win scattering 4 hits over the final 4 1/3 innings.

Berth was separated for 10 runs on 6 hits and 8 walks over 5 1/3 innings with relief help coming from Tyler Marquardt and Zak Pickl.
