Town Peshtigo Accepts Northeast Asphalt Bids

At a brief monthly meeting Tuesday, June 17, Peshtigo Town Board voted without dissent to have all the roads on their proposed list done this summer by Northeast Asphalt, which submitted the low bid for each. The total bid price of $242,981 is within budget.

The Northeast Asphalt sales representative present for the meeting said work on the overlay projects that do not require culverts could begin this week.

Bid price was $16,588.80 for Peterson Road, $56,963.20 for River Bend Drive, $24,939.20 for Seward Heights Drive, $54,700 for Krause Road, $80,930.80 for Kozuzek Road and $8,8560 for Bryiewicz Road.

Peshtigo Asphalt offered to do shouldering on any roads at $17 per ton. The only other bids were from Biehl Construction. Prices were $24,479 for Peterson Road, $77,940 for River Bend,$34,825 for Seward heights, and $12,527 for Bryiewicz.

Supervisor Denise Wiedemeier reported the Spring Cleanup Day was very successful, and so busy that cars were lined up out to Old Peshtigo Road with people waiting to get in. They ordered a second 30 yard dumpster and both were filled.

Cozzy’s Polaris has been bringing in all the pallets they need at the recycling center, and a whole pallet of TVs is now packed up, wrapped and ready to go, Wiedemeier said.

The board thanked Cozzy’s for their generosity, and Wiedemeier said it is nice to have a supply on hand so they can be loaded right away instead of needing to handle the items twice.

She suggested the town should do something about identifying town residents when they come to the Recycling Center and the Cleanup Day service. She asked supervisors to think about it and bring it up again next month. Pat Pottratz, from the audience, suggested having town stickers printed with a spot left where the fire number could be entered when the sticker is issued.

Town Chair Herman Pottratz commented the three workers for Cleanup Day handled the rush of business very well.

Supervisor Mark Monnette reported Christian Petit was hired as a member of the town crew and was doing very well, but due to an off the job injury will be off for about two weeks.

In May the board authorized Supervisors Dan Staudenmaier and Dan Van Beek to purchase a riding lawn mower from Cozzy’s and Van Beek said at $5,600 Cozzy gave them a good deal. Staudenmaier said the grass has been cut and things are working out well.

Town Treasurer Vilas Schroeder reported adjustments were needed for the town’s financial statement to reflect an $81,043 reduction in the fund balance of which $81,000 will be repaid next year when an issue with taxes for Marinette School District is straightened out. The $43 comes from property removed from forest lands. Also the Fire Department received a $500 grant from M&M Community Foundation of Peshtigo. A surplus of $21,383.44 from the 2013 budget year was put into the capital outlay account last month, and money was taken from it this month to pay for the lawn mower and adjust for the school tax payment. Schroeder explained next year they will have the $81,000 from the Marinette School District to enter as a surplus from this year.

The board approved payment of bills totaling $71,762.30.

Pottratz reported he wrote to the DNR regarding the twice a year well testing that is still being required at the town’s former landfill sites on Heath Lane and Kozuzek Road at a cost of about $5,000 a year. He said the sites were burn sites when they were operating and no contaminants have ever been found there except some iron in one of the test wells. They were closed in 1990 at a cost of $770,000 with the help of a $300,000 grant from the DNR. Pottratz noted the town had borrowed to do the closing, and then found the DNR grant was to be paid over a 10-year period.

In any case, he has been advised that if they can find someone interested in digging out whatever contaminated soil still exists and hauling it to a landfill they could sell the land and save the money they spend each year for the well tests, as well as having usable properties again at the two sites. No action was taken.

Fire Chief Mike Folgert reminded everyone of the Fire Department’s 50th anniversary celebration on Saturday, June 21 from noon to 6 p.m. There is to be a pig roast and anyone who attends should bring a dish to pass.

Pottratz noted the Century Bike Run will be on Sunday, June 29, and the Fire Station will be open. Schroeder noted the June Dairy Month Breakfast on the Farm is also on that date, at the Hartwig Farm. The board agreed to purchase a defibrillator for the town hall at a price of about $900. Coble explained the fire department owns one defibrillator and wants to buy another one with a grant they received. Folgert explained the one they have now is very nice, and cost $1,800. He wants to buy two for $900 to $1,000 each, and have one of the matching units in the town’s two fire trucks. The one they own now would then stay at the town hall. He said he wants the new units because they are the same as those used by the City of Peshtigo and City of Marinette fire departments and law enforcement.

All bartender, beer and liquor license applications were approved. Clerk Clarence Coble reported all had passed their background checks. There was no renewal application for Schussler’s Supper Club. Our Place is keeping his license active with his home address.

Schroeder advised the board that County Board at its meeting on Tuesday, June 24 is expected to approve bids for the long awaited resurfacing of County BB. Pottratz complimented Schroeder, who is County Board chair, for doing a good job in getting the BB issues settled.

Pottratz suggested for next year they need to consider putting aside money to re-roof the town hall building, and others on the board agreed, and they all agreed it will be a large expense. Coble suggested they should get a professional to look at it and advise how many years of useful life to expect before it starts leaking. No action was taken.
