Peshtigo Pulls Out
Borkovec worked 5 innings yielding 2 runs on 3 hits to earn the win while Berth escaped a bases loaded jam in the 7th inning for the save against Oconto Falls.
Matt pitched well for five innings and Jordan closed out the game with two strong innings in relief. This was a good pitchers duel and I was very pleased with the pitching performances of Matt and Jordan along with our defensive play and aggressiveness at the plate, Peshtigo coach Marty Zeske said.
Borkovec ran into some early problems when Oconto Falls plated two runs in the opening inning. Alex Johnson singled, Connor Sefcik was hit by a pitch and Bo Shroyer added a two-run single.
Oconto Falls hurler Hunter Magnin protected that lead until the fourth when Peshtigo scored one run and added two more in the fifth.
Jordan Jones singled to open the fourth inning and made his way around the base paths following two-out singles by Marcus Sharkey and Berth.
Peshtigo took the lead for good in the fifth frame scoring two runs on two hits. James Brabant was beaned with one out and Danny Payne slapped a single. After Trey Shepherd whiffed, Jones walked with Payne scoring on an error by Oconto Falls catcher Brett Ash. Darius Dohl cracked a RBI single to send Jones home with the eventual winning run.
In his two innings of mound work, Berth made things interesting. He hit Mike Manns with one out in the sixth and walked Sam Shroyer with two outs. With runners at first and second, Berth coaxed Ash to hit into a inning ending groundout.
Things got more hectic in the 7th for Peshtigo and Berth as Johnson and Sefcik drew one out walks. Berth got Dylan Woosman to hit an unassisted grounder to first base, before walking Bo Shroyer to load the sacks. Clinging to that 3-2 lead, Berth capped the win in style by fanning Manns.
Magnin absorbed the loss for Oconto Falls giving up 3 runs (one earned) on six hits with 9 strikeouts and two walks.
