Ellen K. Sweeney, 101, of Marinette passed away Wednesday, June 25 at Bay Area Medical Center.
Born Oct. 6, 1912, to John and Mary (Korn) Cance in Stanley, she graduated from Stanley High School and then attended Teachers Training School. She taught first grade for two years and then worked at The Falls Dairy in Stanley as a secretary for many years. On Feb. 8, 1937, she married James F. Sweeney at St. Johns Cathedral in Milwaukee and he preceded her in death on March 21, 1990.
An active 4-H leader for many years, she was a member of the Happy Hour Homemakers Club, Victory Memorial Hospital Gray Ladies and was involved in Holy Family Parish of Stanley. She resided in Stanley until 2002, when she moved to live near her daughter, Ruth.
She is survived by two daughters, Joan OBrien, of Holcombe and Ruth Thielen, of Marinette; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Cance of Stanley; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, James, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Edmund, Alex, and Robert Cance; three sons-in-law, Ken OBrien, Ed Swatzina and Mark Thielen and a grandson, Bob Phillippi.
Friends called at the Luther Home in Marinette on Saturday, June 28 from noon until time of funeral services at 1 p.m. Additional time of visitation was held at Holy Family Parish in Stanley on Tuesday, July 1 from 10 a.m. until time of a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Fr. William Felix officiated with burial in Oakland Cemetery, Stanley. Thielen Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements. Memorials can be made to the Stanley Area Historical Society P.O.
