Marinette Notches M&M Win

Backing a stingy pitching performance from Austin Wright with a timely 8-hit attack, Marinette prevailed in the holiday version of the M&M clash Friday 5-2. Wright was nicked for 4 hits during his complete game gem, fanning 8 and walking 3. His mates owned a 2-0 first inning lead and 3-1 spread heading into the fifth before tacking on a pair of insurance tallies.

It wasn’t all good news for Marinette Post 39, especially after getting plunked by visiting Sheboygan twice in a Wednesday doubleheader 11-0 and 11-1.

Sitting at 9-10 overall and 5-0 in the North Division, Marinette fell to Green Bay Southwest Monday night 8-4 before watching a Tuesday doubleheader against DePere 17-U get rained out.

After a couple of days to rest, Marinette will head to Oconto Falls on July 11, entertain White Lake July 14 before traveling to Menominee for round four of the M&M games on Wednesday, July 16.

Seven hits and just a single run spread out over two games against Sheboygan Wednesday wasn’t nearly enough for Marinette at Pedersen Park as the visiting squad prevailed in both contests, 11-0 and then 11-1.

In the opener, Sheboygan put on a pre-holiday batting display as they not only out-hit the Post 39 group 9-3, they took advantage of Marinette miscues and early scoring opportunities in the 11-0 victory.

Sheboygan got off to a quick start with two runs scored in the first frame before putting things out of reach with a five-run fourth. Marinette starter Aaron Benson went five innings, giving up five hits and seven earned runs while walking four. Alex Gressel took over for innings six and seven, giving up four hits and another three earned runs while striking out two and walking one.

With no runs scored, highlights were hard to come by for Post 39 but hits were recorded by Blake Margis, Kiefer Powers and Jacob Sawinski. Sheboygan starter Tyler Zietz recorded five strikeouts in his six innings of work, scattering the three hits and walking two.

Wednesday’s second game saw Sheboygan explode for eight runs in the first two innings, three in the opener and five in the second, to further rattle the Post 39 players 11-1. While Marinette couldn’t close the scoreboard gap in this one, they did get a run across the plate thanks to a fourth-inning RBI off the bat of Margis and a groundout to second that scored Aaron Benson, who had reached on an error earlier in the frame.

That was about it though. Each of the three pitchers Marinette sent to the mound gave up at least a run. Powers got the start and did not fare well as Sheboygan lit up the scoreboard over the game’s first two innings with eight earned runs. The lone strikeout fired in from the Marinette mound came off the arm of reliever Sawinski.

Meanwhile, Sheboygan got six innings of mound work from Tyler VanCalligan, who notched two strikeouts and gave up four hits for a win that came easy thanks to his team’s active bats.

Silence Red Wave


The Marinette offense got rolling early and didn’t let up in turning back Menominee on Friday, July 4 in the holiday diamond clash.

Marinette tallied a pair of runs in the opening frame as leadoff swinger Derek Klegin and number two hitter Bailey Brix singled. A stolen base, wild pitch, run scoring ground out from Nate Kallestad along with a sac fly by Kiefer Powers put Marinette up 2-0.

Menominee cut the deficit to 2-1 in the second inning as Mark Pulver moved to second after his grounder was booted and later thrown away from third sacker Aaron Benson. Riley Hegg pushed Pulver to third base where he scored on a sac fly off the bat of Andy Estrada.

Blake Margis got a break to lead off the second inning as his flyball to leftfield was lost it in the sun by Estrada and ended up as a double. Alex Stodola added a single before Margis headed home on a wild pitch.

Trailing 3-1, Menominee inched closer as Ryne Francour walked to open the fifth inning, Matt Hanson singled and Pulver drew a two-out free pass to load the bases. A passed ball enabled Francour to cross the plate.

With their lead trimmed to 3-2, Marinette gained some needed breathing room in the fifth. Benson singled to start the rally while Jacob Sawinski unloaded a long double to right. With two runners in scoring position, Stodola sent a hot shot up the middle for a pair of RBIs.

Wright took it from there setting Menominee down in order in the sixth and seventh innings to register the win.

The Marinette righthander unleashed 116 pitches during his 7-inning mound stint, throwing 65 for strikes. He walked 3 and recorded 8 strikeouts.

Menominee’s Ryan Woods also went the distance, giving up 8 hits and 5 runs during a 100-pitch outing of which 62 were strikes.

Klegin and Stodola punched out two hits each for Marinette, which swiped 5 bases and committed a trio of errors in the contest.

Walks, walks and more walks.

That was Marinette’s downfall Monday as a pair of hurlers gave up a dozen passes in an 8-4 loss at Green Bay Southwest. Marinette starter Kiefer Powers walked 6 and yielded one hit over 2 1/3 innings while reliever Alex Gressel also gave up 6 walks and 2 hits.

Marinette took a 2-0 first inning lead when Derek Klegin singled and Aaron Benson belted a two-run homer.

Southwest would score the next 6 runs, including a 4 in the third inning.

Benson singled and scored in the fourth while Klegin lashed a hit and raced home on a single from Nate Kallestad.

Nick Zacharias picked up the mound win allowing 4 runs on 5 hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Benson punched out three hits for Marinette and Klegin two.
