3 Injured When Car, Two Semis Crash
Three persons were injured when a car operated by Andrew R. Kunna, 26, Menasha, crossed the center and struck a semi operated by Brian Scott Herrala, 48, Iron Mountain, Mich., causing it to overturn and block the highway. The wreckage was then struck by a semi operated by Peter W. Johnson, 48, Manitowoc.
The crash happened in the early morning hours of Thursday, July 17, on U.S. 141 and State Quarry Road, north of Amberg.
Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Sauve reported County Dispatch received the call at 2:40 a.m. Investigation revealed Kunna was traveling north on U.S. 141 and crossed the centerline impacting a southbound semi operated by Herrala. The fuel tank and trailer were struck causing the semi to fall on its side blocking the highway. A north bound semi operated by Johnson was unable to stop in time and drove through and over the overturned Herrala semi.
All three drivers were alone in their vehicles. Kunna was seriously injured and Herrala and Johnson were treated for non-life threatening injuries. All three were transported to the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital, Iron Mountain, Mich. for treatment.
As a result of the crash, traffic in both directions was detoured for about six hours until a large amount of the debris could be removed. The Johnson semi was empty and the Herrala semi was hauling metal wastes. No hazardous materials were involved.
The sheriff department was assisted at the scene by the State Patrol, Pembine Rescue Squad, fire departments from Wausaukee, Amberg and Pembine, Marinette County Highway Department and Beacon Paramedics from Iron Mountain, Mich.
The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff department and state patrol. Kunna is under investigation for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
