Menominee Opens With Win Before Faltering; Ends Season at 16-19

After opening with a 5-2 win over Hancock in American Legion Zone 5 play Thursday in Marquette, the Menominee Red Wave suffered a pair of losses and were booted off the post-season trail. Menominee was upended by Ishpeming 8-6 in round two before suffering a 4-3 loss to Escanaba Friday.

Zone champion Gladstone along with Escanaba and Marquette qualified for the Michigan state tournament in Gladwin.

Big Sixth Lifts Red

Wave Over Hancock

Menominee hurler Ryan Woods stymied Hancock’s offense into a three-hit effort at the plate while racking up 11 strikeouts in a dominant mound performance that lifted the Red Wave to a 5-2 win in an American Legion Zone 5 opening-round victory on Thursday.

Woods showed tremendous confidence to overcome the run he gave up in the game’s opening inning and went on to shut down the opposition for the next four innings of the contest.

Meanwhile, the Red Wave batters did their job, scoring a pair in the third to take the lead as Mason Kewley turned in a double, followed by a single from Adam Nolde to put runners on both corners. Ryne Francour lifted a sac fly to tie the game at one apiece and then Woods helped himself out by blasting an RBI double to give Menominee the 2-1 lead.

With the score knotted at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Woods again created some offense for his team as he looked to pick up the mound win by stealing second base after reaching first base thanks to a Hancock error. Woods crossed home plate later in the inning to break the tie off a single from Matt Hanson. Riley Hegg cranked a two-run double late run the inning to give Menominee a pair of insurance runs.

Red Wave Downed

By Ishpeming 8-6

The second day of Zone 5 action got off to a rough start for Menominee as they dropped the first of their two scheduled games to Ishpeming by a final of 8-6. It was a tough defeat to swallow as the Red Wave held a 4-2 lead at the conclusion of the opening inning thanks to an RBI-double from Matt Hanson and a two-run double from Riley Hegg, who was later brought in by Andrew Leinonen’s RBI infield grounder. But a three-run fifth by Ishpeming put Menominee behind for good.

The Red Wave made an effort to get back into it in the seventh as Hanson and Landon Maccoux each singled to set up scoring opportunities. They were obliged later in the frame as Mark Pulver and Hegg connected for RBIs, bringing Menominee as close as it would get to reclaiming the lead at 8-6.

Menominee Falls To

Escanaba In Finale

The Red Wave looked to be in good shape to rebound from the earlier loss to Ishpeming as they jumped out to an early 2-0 lead over Escanaba in their second game Friday.

Up 1-0 in the third, Ryne Francour and Ryan Woods each singled before Francour came home on a fielder’s choice play from Matt Hanson.

But Escanaba chipped away at the Red Wave defense in the game’s later innings to take a 4-2 advantage. Menominee made it interesting in the seventh as Adam Nolde clocked a double before Francour reached on a walk. Woods then belted an RBI single that got Menominee as close as it would get at 4-3.
