I read your printed paper and/or online paper faithfully as it is an excellent source of local news. Please keep up the good work!
Two headlines in the Feb. 22 edition caught my immediate attention. County Jail Population Nears Excess Capacity and County May Donate $1.5 Million For Marinette Community Center.
As I carefully read the stories I cannot believe that the County Board, interim County Administrator and County Board Chairman would even consider using taxpayers money to pay towards a facility of this type in Marinette. While it is a wonderful thing for Marinette to build a multipurpose facility there will be little if any use by the majority of people that don't live close to Marinette. Much of the county is a long drive from Marinette. Crivitz has their own excellent Community Center already. People from all over the county around Crivitz use it. Marinette County tax papers did not help pay for it! Our only child learned to swim taking many lessons at the YMCA and University Pool yet we've never used the other existing facility and I expect most county residents have not either. Does anyone really see that changing?
Conventions or trade shows won't be coming to Marinette as there isn't a large enough area population to attract vendors for these events. The Cabella's fishing tournament coming to town for the first time is hardly a reason for Marinette County to spend $1.5 million. Besides I believe Marinette is paying them to come and giving them other incentives as well. This new facility will not be a reason to come to Marinette as there are bigger and nicer places all over the country. Let's face it the City of Marinette is not a destination for most of the year.
It the article it says that the Marinette School "donated property". This property the tax payers paid for. The school's do not make money they spend tax payer money. The tax payers are also paying for the infrastructure improvements for this facility.
Marinette County tax payers may be facing the cost of adding on to the fairly new jail in the very near future. $1.5 million would go a long ways towards this expense. If the County Board wants to know what the public thinks send the question to referendum.
President Trump has denounced the American media accusing them of reporting fake news and calling them the enemy of the people.
Thomas Jefferson said if the United States could have a government or a free press he would prefer the latter.
Senator John McCain said the first thing a dictator does in taking over a country is silence an independent media.
President Trump is now selectively inviting representatives of the press to briefings excluding those media that have been critical of his policies and leadership.
The moment for America is more serious than Watergate and Nixon.
Former Supreme Court Justice David Souter recently stated that two thirds of Americans don't even know that their country has three branches of the government. They don't know who to hold accountable for the festering problems. When problems get bad enough a serious terrorist attack or another financial melt down some person will come forward and say, "Give me total power and I will solve the problem". That is how democracy dies.
Freedom of the press is the corner stone of a Democracy and is critical to having a transparent government holding all decision makers accountable.
