THE CITY REBORN FROM THE ASHES OF AMERICA'S MOST DISASTROUS FOREST FIRE
Letter To The Editor
Issue Date: March 22, 2017
It is great that the Doug Otizinger replied to my letter to you. It seems like he may have missed one big point and has tried to play games with numbers as well. I suggested the Marinette County Board let the voters decide by sending the request to a referendum. There is plenty of time. With only 26% of the population living in Marinette if the question is sent to the voters I suspect it will get voted down. Even if everyone in Peshtigo votes for it they may still come up short since that is 49% of the total population of the county. I am wondering how many are voters as he does not specify that they are.
A better solution might be to ask the cities of Peshtigo or Menominee to help fund the project. They are both close and residents from both cities would be more likely to use the facility than people living in the outer regions of Marinette County. Peshtigo must have lots of money as they are spending some of it on a fish viewing platform.
Lots of tax dollars are used to maintain and build roads that all Marinette people and everyone else uses to get to and from Marinette from all points out of the city. These same roads allow visitors to come to Marinette. Many people from the entire county and visitors go to Marinette to shop so I would guess that the sales taxes from Marinette are paid to Marinette businesses by many of the other 74% of the county people not living in Marinette plus those visitors.
County residents helped pay for the major pool updates and many repairs at the UW-Marinette.
Marinette has 24 police officers while Marinette County only has 32 deputies. I know that Marinette County deputies back up the police in all cities and towns of the county. Doesn't the county handle dispatch for the city?
Marinette is paying a nice chunk of money and throwing in freebies to bring the Cabella's fishing tournament to Marinette. Maybe that money would have better spent on the new facility as every dollar counts doesn't it?
Maybe Marinette could raid the tourism folks money as they seem to have excess funds?
The city room tax could be increased to fund the project perhaps?
I stated that the County Board should ask the voters if they want to give the city $1.5 million dollars. From the headline on March 8 "Sheriff: Drug Deaths Down, Jail Overcrowding Is Issue", I'm thinking a new $11 million jail pod will need to be built along with more employees and overhead real soon. The people deserve a say in how county tax payer money is spent for luxuries don't you think?
