Marines Fall Twice in NEC, Oconto Falls Splits Games

Issue Date: April 12, 2017

Marinette's Eldredge

Shuts Out Oconto

Fans of the Marinette Marines saw a complete game from their home-town team Friday night at Pedersen Ball Park.  As the Marines welcomed the Oconto Blue Devils to town, they had everything working in their favor.  Marinette junior Matt Eldredge was dialed in on the mound as he tossed four perfect innings before Oconto finally mustered up a hit in the top of the fifth.  Marinette's offense was also on point as they put up ten runs, on their way to a 10-0 victory in six innings.

"Our plan was to kind of use a little bit of everybody tonight. Matt two to three innings, Tanner Cole an inning, Kyler Kruse an inning, but obviously with the way Matt was throwing, a perfect game going through four innings, you can't take a kid out in that situation, especially with the pitch count he had.  He threw a complete game with 74 pitches, I mean that's a heck of a ballgame," said Marine Coach Andy Walters.

Marinette's leadoff batter James Jagielski started the home-half of the first inning with a single.  After Jagielski stole second base, he advanced to third on a fly out before Nick Daye scored him on a sacrifice fly to grab a 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, Eldredge helped his own cause with a single and a steal of second base.  Trey Bretl drilled a base hit to left to score Eldredge and make it a 2-0 contest.

It was in the third inning that the Marines did most of their damage.  Daye began the inning with a walk, followed by back-to-back hits from Kyler Kruse and Spencer Hipke that plated Daye.  Eldredge reached safely thanks to an error that scored Kruse, and Hipke also scored on an error.  An RBI single off the bat of Jacob Perkins pushed the lead to 6-0, and Perkins was plated on Jagielski's sharply hit single for the fifth run of the inning.

"I liked the way we approached this game, our mental mindset.  It showed on the field and in the game that our kids were ready to play today and in all phases of the game we played well," Coach Walters said.

Eldredge continued to be lights out in the top of the fourth inning as he shut down the Oconto batters in order.  In the fifth, Oconto's Parker Anderson ended Eldredge's perfect game bid with a single.

Jagielski again sparked a run scored in the fifth inning as he started the inning with a walk.  Tanner Cole laced a double down the left field line to bring Jagielski home and extend the lead to 8-0.  Two more runs in the sixth enforced the run rule for the Marines, who took the 10-0 win.

Eldredge's brilliant performance was marked by six innings pitched, just two hits, zero walks, and four strikeouts.

"If he can pitch like that the entire season, he's going to be tough.  He had good velocity tonight, his curveball was breaking, he was able to change speeds, but most importantly, he was just throwing strikes.  Excellent job, it's a testament to his offseason because I know he's worked a lot on his pitching," said Coach Walters.

Oconto's Matt Zahm suffered the loss with just two innings pitched, allowing six runs (five earned), on five hits, three walks and one strikeout.

James Jagielski went 2-for-2 on the day and Jacob Perkins added a 2-for-3 performance for the Marines.  Parker Anderson and Bennett Frazier secured the two hits for the Blue Devils.

Marines No Match

for Mustangs

The Marinette Marines took to the road Tuesday evening to take on the Little Chute Mustangs in a North Eastern Conference matchup. Marinette's offense went cold on the chilly day as they could only muster one run and went on to lose, 3-1 to the Mustangs.

Trey Bretl suffered the Marinette mound loss with six innings pitched, giving up three runs (one earned) on five hits, a walk and give strikeouts. Nick Daye, Kyler Kruse, Spencer Hipke, Matt Eldredge and Kevin Charlesworth each recorded a hit for the Marines with Eldredge recording the only RBI.

Marines Fall

to Panthers

Marinette traveled to Oconto Falls Thursday as the Marines matched up with the Panthers in an NEC battle.  The Marines took a one-run lead twice, but the Panthers came back to tie the game and ultimately win the contest, 3-2.

Marinette's Spencer Hipke singled to right field in the second and Rylie Nelson reached based via an error.  Hunter Jardeen walked and Trey Bretl was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Hipke and give Marinette a 1-0 lead.

Oconto Falls tied the game in the bottom of the second.  In the fifth, the Marines regained the lead as Tanner Cole laced a double and was brought home by a single off the bat of Kyler Kruse.  In the bottom half of the fifth, the Panthers tied the game and scored the go-ahead run.  Kamden Bloom's RBI double gave Oconto Falls the lead in which they did not surrender again.  Oconto Falls beat Marinette 3-2.

Marine James Jagielski suffered the loss with six innings pitched, allowing three runs (one earned), on five hits, four walks and ten strikeouts.   Oconto Falls' Jason Moeller earned the win in four innings of work, he gave up one earned run on five hits and a "K".

Nelson finished the day 2-for-3 for Marinette, Jardeen was 1-for-2, and Kruse and Hipke each finished 1-for-3 on the day.  Oconto Falls was led by Bloom with a 3-for-3 performance including a double and an RBI and Michael Vervelde who went 2-for-3.

Battle of Oconto's

Won by Blue Devils

Saturday afternoon the Oconto Blue Devils traveled to Oconto Falls to take on the Panthers.  Seven hits combined with six Panther errors led the Blue Devils to a 13-0 win in five innings.  Oconto scored two first inning runs, followed by three in the second, five in the fourth and three more in the fifth.

Oconto's Tony Marquardt earned the mound win with four innings pitched, allowing just two hits and two walks while fanning seven batters.  Bennett Frazier and Carson Moe each went 2-for-4 with a double for the Blue Devils.

Oconto Fall's Michael LeVielle suffered the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned), on five hits, two walks and five strikeouts.

Freedom Frazzles

Oconto Falls

Oconto Falls played host to Freedom Tuesday night as the Panthers took on the Irish in an NEC contest. Freedom grabbed the lead in the top of the first and never relinquished it, as they went on to win 3-1 over Oconto Falls.

The Panthers scored their only run in the fourth to cut the lead to 2-1, but the Irish added an insurance run in the sixth for their third and final run of the game. Freedom's Jacob Balthozor took the complete game allowing just one earned run on four hits and two walks while piling up ten strikeouts. Mason Sefcik suffered the loss for the Panthers. In five and a third innings pitched, he gave up three runs (one earned) on seven hits, a walk and six strikeouts.

Sam Virtues recorded Oconto Falls' only RBI with a double in the fourth inning. Freedom's Parker Rudie and Jason Bailey each went 2-for-3 on the night.

"Freedom was very efficient with base runners. They combined men on base with timely hitting to win this game," said Panther Coach Charlie Rochon. "(Freedom's) Jacob Balthozor kept our hitters off stride all game."
