Post 39 Opens Tourney With Win

Issue Date: July 26, 2017

Marinette Escapes Host

Kimberly's Grasp

After earning a trip to the class AAA state tournament, Marinette's Post 39 Legion team was matched up with the tournament host, Kimberly, for their opening round matchup. At just 4-18 on the year, Kimberly looked to be a breeze for Marinette's opener. However, everyone has heard the saying about assuming.

A 0-0 tie was broken in the top of the third inning as Kimberly was the first ones to score, and in a big way. Jack Kieffer drew a walk to lead off the inning. A sacrifice bunt moved Keiffer to second and Drew Johnson's single plated Kieffer. Ben Buckner doubled and Johnson sprinted home on a wild pitch. Buckner then came around to home plate on an error and Kimberly jumped ahead 3-0.

Matt Osterberg's one-out single in the fourth sparked Marinette. Spencer Hipke delivered a double down right field to score Osterberg for Post 39's first run.

Marinette was able to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Osterberg again singled and Nick Daye followed with a single of his own. A passed ball allowed Osterberg and Daye to advance, and Osterberg raced home on an over throw. Hipke was able to reach on an infield single that gave Daye enough time to score, tying the game at 3-3.

Post 39 grabbed the lead in the seventh as Jack Farley coaxed a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sac-bunt. Farley scored on James Jagielski's base hit. Jagielski then swiped second base and scored as Adam Wahl drilled a single to center field.

Kimberly was able to plate two runs in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game again at 5-5. A scoreless bottom of the eighth and top of the ninth set the table for an exciting bottom of the ninth. Nick Sailer drew a leadoff walk. A wild pitch allowed Sailer to reach second and he stole third a few pitches later. A wild pitch gave Sailer just enough time to slide home safely, giving Marinette a 6-5, walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth.

Spencer Hipke paced Post 39 with a 2-for-3 day including a double and two RBI, Adam Wahl and Matt Osterberg each added two hits as well. Austin Marquardt earned the mound win in relief with two innings pitched, giving up one unearned run on two hits and three strikeouts.

Marinette plays Eau Claire tonight, July 26th, at 6:30, with the next game to be determined.

Marinette Opens

Regional Play With Win

The Marinette legion Post 39 baseball team started regional play last Wednesday and were able to battle their way to a 6-3 win over a powerful Green Bay Shockers team.

The Marinette win was game two of tournament play. In game one Bay Port overcame the Green Bay Bluejays 3-0.

In Marinette's Wednesday night action Post 39 fought hard over the middle innings, swatting the ball with tenacity to build a lead that the defense was able to keep strong with smart plays.

Marinette got things rolling in the bottom of third inning as Nick Sailer led off with a double to right field. He stole third before being plated by James Jagielski on a double to right as well.

The fourth was were the Marinette guys laid a wound that the Shocker were, well, shocked with. Spencer Hipke led the inning off with a base off an error while Austin Marquardt helped to score him off a double to left field. Marquardt went home in the next at bat as Sailer clubbed a single to center. Sailer later scored on a Trey Bretl single while Jagielski bagged a run off an error giving the Marinette Legion a 5-0 lead.

The Shockers responded to the slugfest by securing a few fifth inning runs. Jayden Adrians reached on a fielders choice and scored off a Bryce Miller hit. Colin Dougherty added the second Shocker run of the night.

The sixth saw one more Shocker run hit home as Will Conard crossed the plate for a 5-3 deficit.

Adam Wahl gave the Marinette boys their final run of the night, reaching base off a walk before going home on a Bretl single to center field.

Matt Osterberg picked up the in on the mound getting nine strikeouts while allowing five hits, three runs (one earned) and two walks.

Green Bay's Jayden Adrians took the loss giving up 10 hits, six runs, (three earned) and eight walks while striking out five.

At the plate Marinette was led by Sailer with a three of five showing. he got two runs and one RBI. Bretl was two of four with two RBIs while Jagielski was one of four with one run and one RBI.

The Shockers were led by Jarrett Scheelk with a two of four showing.

Marinette Continues

Regional Wins with

Bay Port Crushing

After taking a win in game two Marinette resumed play on Thursday defeating Bay Port 8-2 at Pedersen Ball Park in Marinette.

Unlike their previous game the Marinette bats started hot. Nick Sailer opened the game with a walk followed by James Jagielski on a single to right. Nick Daye slugged a shot that was pulled in for a double play that scored Sailer. Hipke swatted a single to plate Jagielski, giving the Marinette Legion a 2-0 lead.

That lead increased by one over the second as Cole Tackmier reached on an error and went home off Austin Marquardt's double to left field.

Marinette made it 4-0 over the third inning thanks to a single by Daye and a single that scored him by Tackmier.

Bay Port narrowed the lead by one over the third with a single by Danny Fricke and a single by Logan Donart.

Marinette got one over the fourth thanks to a run scored by Nick Sailer off a Daye fly out to left field.

During the top of the fifth Marinette's Jagielski slugged a single for two RBIs and the 7-1 lead.

Bay Port added their final run during the fifth thanks to a Jordan Bindas single that brought home Brett Stanzel.

Marinette capped the nights scoring with run scored by Jagielski in the eighth off a Spencer Hipke sacrifice fly.

Trey Bretl took the mound win with two strikeouts to his name. He allowed eight hits, two earned runs and five walks.

Bob Tilot took the loss with one strikeout. He allowed six hits, five runs four earned runs and four walks.

At the plate Marinette was led by Jagielski with a three of four showing with two runs and two RBIs. Hipke was two of four with two RBIs while Marquardt was two of four with one run and one RBI.

Marinette Shocks Green

Bay for Regional Title

At Pedersen Ball Park Friday, the Green Bay Shockers looked to avenge their opening round loss to Marinette's Post 39 Legion team. This time, a regional title and state tournament trip was on the line.

Both offenses lit up the scoreboard nearly every inning. The Shockers took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Marinette chipped away with a run in the second, but Green Bay added two more runs in the third inning for a 5-1 lead. Post 39 scored three runs in their half of the third inning, trimming the lead to 5-4.

Marinette grabbed their first lead in the fourth inning when they pushed three runs across. Green Bay added one run in the fifth inning, but Post 39 added two runs in the sixth to go ahead 9-6. The Shockers tied the game 9-9 in the top of the eighth inning putting the pressure on Marinette, who responded in a big way.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Marinette's red-hot bats continued to shine. James Jagielski led off with a single and stole second base. Adam Wahl was then hit by a pitch and Matt Osterberg sacrificed himself to move both runners into scoring position. With a base open, Trey Bretl was intentionally walked to load the bases. Nick Daye delivered a clutch single to score both Jagielski and Wahl. A wild pitch put both Bretl and Daye into scoring position and Spencer Hipke's single allowed both runners to score. Post 39 took a 13-9 lead into the ninth inning.

"Having the offense we have right now is important because everyone in our batting order can hit the ball." Post 39's Adam Wahl added, "When we can put up ten to fifteen hits in one game, that just shows how hot we are right now. It also gives our pitchers more confidence to throw strikes and get ahead in the count."

Matt Eldredge shut down the Shockers in their last at-bats, sending Marinette to the state tournament with a regional title under their belts. Eldredge took home the win, pitching four and two-thirds innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits, three walks and two strikeouts.

James Jagielski led Post 39 with a 4-for-5 day including four runs scored and an RBI. Adam Wahl was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI and Nick Sailer was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Nick Sailer, Marinette's only player to come back from college, said of the team, "It's been a really fun experience to make it to state. That was our goal from the beginning of regionals and we weren't going to accept anything less, so we went out there and made it happen." Sailer added about having a year of college under his belt, "It's nice having a year of college experience because watching for a year helped me see the game in a different way. It also helped me learn how to be a better player mentally, and a better teammate."

Wahl also talked about playing the Shockers, "Coming into regionals we knew it was going to be us against the Shockers. They are a super good team with great hitting skills. In catching both games, I realized we couldn't leave anything over the plate or they would crush it, so we worked the corners and off-speed pitches a lot. That kept them off balance and really gave us the opportunity to take it to them offensively."
