Marinette Legion Falls In State Run

Issue Date: August 2, 2017

Marinate Drops First Game of State Run

The Marinette Legion Post 39 baseball team suffered a 3-0 loss in Kimberly when they took on Eau Claire during the AAA Legion state tournament.

The bats just weren't where Marinette needed them to be as only four hits were committed by the guys in purple in white.

Eau Claire scored a run during the second inning and added another in the fifth while getting one last run in the sixth to take the win.

Matt Osterberg was saddled with the loss giving up five hits, three runs (one earned) and five walks while striking out six.

At the plate Nick Sailer was two of four while Spencer Hipke was one of two.

Marinette Gets Knocked Out of State Tournament with Loss to DePere

Though the bats found considerable ground in the second game of the AAA Legion State tournament, it all happened too late, as an early game push put DePere ahead of the Marinette boys who fell 10-8.

Though Marinette fell by two the hits were equal with their opponents as both teams ended the game with 11 hits.

Marinette did get one run in the top of the first as Nick Sailer skirted home on a wild pitch. But then a lull set in as DePere started to heat up.

They posted two first inning runs and increased the lead over the third with another run for the 3-1 lead.

An additional three runs in the fourth gave DePere the 6-1 lead before Marinette opened up the game a bit.

Cole Tackmier narrowed the lead after going home off an Adam Wahl single.

But DePere was quick to respond as four more runs piled across the plate for that 10 point total.

Marinette started to really close the gap over the closing innings especially in the seventh when Austin Marquardt led off with a walk. He was followed by Nick Sailer on a double and both runners went home off a Jagielski double. Next up was Adam Wahl and he did not disappoint as he crushed a two run homer for the 10-6 deficit.

That deficit was narrowed further in the final inning as Wahl hit yet another two run homer to bring the game to its final score of 10-8.

At the plate Wahl led the way with a three of four showing with two runs and two home runs. Tackimier and Marquardt both went two of three with one run. Sailer was two of five with two runs.

After a fantastic season the Marinette boys were recognized in the AAA All-Tournament Team where Nick Sailer and Adam Wahl both recieved elections to.

Red Wave Earns Runner-Up Honors

Menominee's Red Wave Legion team competed in the Michigan Legion Class A state tournament. The Red Wave took the tournament by storm early, winning their opening round matchup over Gladstone, a powerhouse program in the U.P., by a score of 2-0. Bryce Tharp threw a three-hit shutout in which he walked five and struck out eight. Jesus Becerra led the team with two singles while Kyle Porath and Kyle Struve laced a single each.

In their second game, Menominee crushed Gladwin 14-3 behind a nine-run first inning. Levi Kempka earned the win for the Red Wave as he pitched five innings, allowing three runs on four hits, three walks and four strikeouts. Jason Janquardt paced the offense with a 2-for-2 performance including a triple, double and two RBI.

The Red Wave's next opponent came in the form of Gaylord in the semi-final game. In a back-and-forth contest, Menominee went on to win 8-6 after scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth and held Gaylord scoreless in the top of the seventh. Nathan Nowack took the mound victory, throwing six innings, giving up six runs on just two hits, three walks and two strikeouts. Struve went 3-for-4 in the contest with two RBI.

Menominee was the only remaining unbeaten team in the tournament and advanced to the championship game. Fighting all the way back for the second championship game bid was the boys from Gladstone that looked to avenge their opening round loss. Gladstone won a wild first game, 9-6, forcing a second, winner take all, championship contest. Nowack went 3-for-3 in the contest for the Red Wave including a homer, a double, and three RBI.

Menominee took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but from there it was all Gladstone. An unanswered 15 runs for Gladstone helped put the Red Wave away and win the title 15-2. Nowack again paced the offense for Menominee with a 1-for-3 performance.
