Hugh Mason Vary, 92, of Menominee, Mi., passed away Monday, July 31, 2017 at Luther Home in Marinette.
Born Aug. 28, 1924, to the late Charles and Mary (Webb) Vary in Menominee, he graduated from Menominee High School in 1942 and served in the United States Army during World War II. He received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Michigan College of Mining and Technology (Michigan Tech) in 1952.
On May 26, 1956, he married Marjorie E. Anderson at First Presbyterian Church in Menominee and she preceded him in death in 2007. He worked at various companies in the Iron Mountain/Norway area and returned to Menominee in 1975 and worked at various companies in the area.
A City Council member for the First Ward in Menominee from 2012-2016, he was a past Master of the Masonic Lodges in Norway and Menominee, a member and recipient of the Meritorious Service Award of the Valley of Marquette Scottish Rite Consistory, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a charter member of the Menominee Unit of US Power Squadron and a past Sea Scout leader.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sailing, reading and spending time in the woods.
He is survived by two daughters, Lisa Vary and Elizabeth "Beth" Vary, both of Menominee.
In addition to his parents and wife, Marjorie, he was preceded in death by a half-sister, Doris Vary John.
Visitation will be held at Cadieu Thielen Funeral Home in Menominee on Saturday, Aug. 12 from noon until time of a Masonic Service at 2 p.m., followed by a Memorial Service. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Memorials can be directed to the family.
