Marinette & Menominee Claim Road Victories

Issue Date: September 6, 2017

Big 4th Quarter Helps Maroons Down Ghosts

Menominee went into the fourth quarter trailing Kaukauna Friday, Sept 1, but two fourth quarter touchdowns helped the Maroons defeat the Galloping Ghosts 41-33.

Senior running back Jacob Rivard started the Maroons off on the right foot in the first quarter, and he kept it going all game, as he finished with a big-time stat line of 21 attempts for 175 yards and five trips to the end zone.

He was heavily leaned on all game, as the Maroons attempted six passes and didn't complete a single one.

Sophomore Noah Van Asten put Kaukauna on the board before the end of the first quarter, however, evening the score, 7-7. Van Asten passed for 286 yards on 20 for 27 passing with three touchdowns.

Junior Tyler Froehlich gave the Ghosts a 14-7 lead, but Rivard swung the game back in the Maroons' favor before halftime with 25 and 5-yard touchdowns. Junior kicker Shawn Sandahl made one of two extra points and the Maroon lead was 20-14.

Kaukauna started the third quarter with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Van Asten to senior wide receiver Nic Giordana.

The game continued to swing back and forth, however, as Rivard scored from six yards out to give Menominee a 26-21 lead. The lead didn't last the rest of the quarter, however, as Van Asten hit junior Mason Van Zeeland for a 33-yard touchdown. That made the lead 27-26 going into the fourth.

Senior Ethan Mileski was Menominee's other big runner, as he ran 21 times for 159 yards, scoring a 2-yard touchdown to start the fourth-quarter scoring. Rivard scored his fifth and final touchdown pushing the Maroons lead to 41-27.

Van Asten threw another touchdown pass to junior Cole Hurst in the fourth, but it wasn't enough, as the game ended 41-33.

In addition to Rivard and Mileski's 334 combined yards, junior Devon Bournonville ran six times for 86 yards, with a long of 53 yards.

Menominee is now 2-0 on the year after defeating Marinette in the M&M game. They face Fond du Lac at home next week before heading back to the Upper Peninsula for conference play.

Kaukauna (1-2) heads back on the road to Marshfield next Friday.

Marines Enter Win Column, Beat Panthers

Friday evening the Marinette Marines traveled to Oconto Falls to take on the Panthers in a North Eastern Conference showdown. Out their ten drives, the Marines made good on seven of them, finding the end zone on all but three. Marinette outgained Oconto Falls 18 to 9 on first downs, en route to a 39-9 victory.

Completing their first drive of the day, Marine Adam Wahl blasted through for a one-yard TD run. Walker Stroming was good on the extra point for a 7-0 Marinette lead. Oconto Falls responded with a field goal on their first drive as Mitchell Manns booted a 21-yarded through the uprights, cutting the lead to 7-3.

Taking the 7-3 lead into the second quarter, Marinette put together a seven-play drive, amounting to 65 yards, capped off by a Dalton Weissberger 2-yard TD run. Stroming's kick was good once again, and Marinette began to roll, up 14-3. Later in the second, quarterback Matt Wagner found tall receiver Matt Eldredge for a "Matt Squared" 8-yard touchdown pass. The extra point extended the Marine halftime lead to 21-3.

Oconto Falls looked to get their momentum going in the second half as Dakota Carriveau passed a 20-yard touchdown to Cliff Yuma. This score cut the lead to 21-9, but this was as close as the Panthers would get. Marinette responded with a 12-play, 60-yard drive, ending in tight end Jake Poetzl's 18-yard touchdown reception from Wagner, extending the lead to 27-9.

Heading into the fourth, the Matt and Matt combo were at it again for Marinette as Wagner found Eldredge for a 13-yard TD. Marinette back Joe Bezio capped off the Marines' big day with a 69-yard touchdown run at the end of the game, putting the score to its final of 39-9.

Wagner finished 9 for 9, good for 158 yards and three touchdowns for Marinette. Wahl led the Marine ground game with 111 yards and a TD. Rylie Nelson finished the contest with 69 yards receiving for Marinette.

Carriveau went 9 of 27 for 111 yards and a touchdown for Oconto Falls' passing game, while also leading the Panther rushing attack with 24 yards. Trevor Pankratz caught five passes for 61 yards.
