Issue Date: September 20, 2017
Glenn Garfield Nelson, Jr., 77, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017 at Sun Valley Homes in Marinette.
Born Oct. 9, 1939 in Artesian, S.D., to Glenn and Eunice Nelson, he was known as "Gar" to family and was the oldest of three boys raised on the family farm. At age 12, they moved to Southern California with their Uncle Dick, Aunt Julie and cousins. He said growing up in Los Angeles in the 50's was a land of opportunity for a young South Dakota farm boy.
He graduated from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and was a licensed Civil Engineer. He returned to LA and worked for 30 years for the LA County Road Department designing roads and beach bike paths. On Sept. 9, 1965, he married Reba Ann Stockman, a farm girl from Alabama and they raised two sons in Hacienda Heights, Ca.
After retiring, they moved to the hills outside of Shady Cove, Or. and chose there because he couldn't weather the Alabama summers nor the South Dakota winters. He could be seen riding his tractor working the land or grading the communal road.
An active member of AA with 28 years of sobriety, he was a kind, gentle man, had a quiet, but firm faith, enjoyed talking with neighbors, was the hero of his two sons and "Papa" of his two granddaughters.
He is survived by two sons, Jon (Michelle) of Marinette and Chris; two brothers, Keith (Linda) and David; a sister, Shellie; two granddaughters and many cousins, nephews and nieces.
Services will be held in Oregon at a later date. Hansen Onion Martell Funeral Home of Marinette is assisting the family.
