Rangers Fall to Pioneers at WIAA 8-Man Jamboree
Issue Date: November 1, 2017
Saturday afternoon, the Wausaukee Rangers traveled to Schofield, Wisconsin to compete in the annual 8-man Jamboree. The Rangers were one of eight teams to receive the honorary invite to compete. Wausaukee was matched up with the Sevastopol Pioneers, whom they lost to earlier this season 28-6. Fighting to avenge that loss, the Rangers came out of the gates firing.
Just over three minutes into the first quarter, Wausaukee drew first blood. Matthew Delfosse found Christian Shigouri for a 39-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion pass failed, but the Rangers grabbed a 6-0 lead.
Solid defense got the ball back for the Rangers, and they took advantage of the opportunity. Touchdown machine Delfosse punched in a 1-yard TD run with 2:52 left on the clock in the quarter. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful, but the lead was doubled, 12-0.
Sevastopol took until the second quarter, but eventually found their stride. Ethan Kroll plunged into the end zone from 2 yards out, just over a minute into the second quarter, cutting the lead in half, 12-6.
The Pioneers took their first lead of the game as Jacob Wesling found an open Max Krohn for a 10-yard touchdown pass. Wesling took it himself for the two-point conversion, breaking the tie and giving Sevastopol a 14-12 lead, that they took into the halftime break.
Early in the second half, Sevastopol added to their narrow lead as Kroll found daylight and broke free for a 53-yard touchdown run. Kroll passed to Zach Christianson for the two-point conversion and a 22-12 advantage. Later in the quarter, Wesling found Krohn for a 58-yard touchdown pass, the two-point conversion failed, but Sevastopol earned a 28-12 lead.
The Rangers cut into the deficit before the third quarter ended. Delfosse connected with Shigouri on another touchdown pass, this time from 19 yards out. Hayden Renikow ran in the two-point conversion and the lead was cut to 28-20.
Unfortunately for the Rangers, the only score in the fourth quarter was by the Pioneers. Welsing threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Alex Krause and Kroll punched in the two-point conversion. This would bring the score to its eventual final, 36-20, Sevastopol.
Delfosse completed 7 of 21 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 27 times for 75 yards and a TD to lead Wausaukee. Shigouri caught three passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns.
