Donald L. Knutson, 92, of Marinette, passed away Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017 at Atrium Post Acute Care.
Born March 20, 1925 in Marinette, to the late Clarence and Elizabeth (Juneau) Knutson, he graduated from Marinette High School in 1943 where he lettered in track, football and basketball. He served in the United States Navy in the Pacific during World War II and then attended Wabash College in Indiana, where he also played football.
He returned to Marinette and was proud to be a lifelong resident of Menekaunee. He married Shirley Grun on Oct. 28, 1950 at St. Anne's Church in Menominee. He managed Little River Country Club for four years in the late 60's and worked as a salesman for many years, retiring in 1990.
At an early age, he loved the outdoors and all the activities that went with it, including speed skating, sailing and log rolling. He loved fishing and was famous for his smoked fish. He enjoyed golfing and was proud to get a hole in one. A member of Holy Family Parish, he was outgoing, loved making people smile and cheered for the Packers.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Shirley of Menominee; a daughter, Sheri (Jim) Ackley of Brevard, N.C.; a sister, Clarice (Robert) Duvall of Bagley; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Kathleen; a brother, David and a sister, Elaine.
Visitation was held at Thielen Funeral Home on Monday, Nov. 6 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at Holy Family Parish " Our Lady of Lourdes Church Taylor St. at noon. Rev. Celestine Byekwaso officiated with entombment in Forest Home Mausoleum. Memorials in his name are appreciated for the Marinette Recreation Center.
