Town of Peshtigo Has Surplus For 2017

Issue Date: January 17, 2018

The Town Of Peshtigo Board Meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 16 opened with a moment of silence for Russ Bauer who passed away on Monday, Jan. 15. He was a longtime member of the Marinette County Board and Town of Peshtigo Board.

Chairperson Denise Wiedemeier gave an update on the status of the Tyco situation. She stated a small geographical area is completed for phase I and they are working on phase II. After six hours of phone calls and conference calls, she wasn't able secure much information, other than it is a private issue between the land owners and Tyco.

Wiedemeier said in the beginning stages, she had three demands of Tyco and the affiliates involved which included each property owner be notified by mail of the situation. Secondly they needed to set up a Town Hall meeting immediately, which both have been done and thirdly to have a follow up meeting which is yet to be scheduled.

At this point there is not much information that is being shared with the Town. There is a phone number to call if you anyone has any questions or concerns, 1-800-314-1381. For those who care to do further research on the computer there is a website with directions of how to navigate thru the process. If interested in the website information and directions you can call the Peshtigo Town Hall.

Vilas Schroeder also announced there will be a County Board Meeting on Jan. 30 with representatives from the DNR about the DPA levels and a request was also made for a Tyco Representative to be present.

In the treasurers report given by Treasurer, Vilas Schroeder, he included the 2017 budget amendments with total revenues of $913,251.62 and total expenses of $888,196.99 which leaves a 2017 surplus of $25,054.63 along with undesignated funds from prior years of $89,799.07 equating to $114,853.70 total funds to be designated. Vilas said "The surplus was floating in operating funds since 2001".

After discussion from the board it was agreed to transfer the $25,054.63 for the Fire Department to use as needed and the $89,799.07 to be used for road repairs. Chairperson Denise Wiedemeier stated there are many roads and shoulders of the roadway in need of improvements and suggested to use the excess for road repair and improvements.

Schroeder also stated there is a special County Board Meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 23 to approve expenditures for Broadband and they will be applying for a grant. Packerland is fairly confident the grant will be issued.

Town Clerk, Clarence Coble announced the Town is need of a few people to help with the voting machines for the upcoming elections. This is a paid position and training will be provided. Anyone interested can contact Clarence at the Town Hall for further details.

Payment of $7,385 was approved for the Fire Department Service Awards Program. This is for administrative fees to run and operate the department. The cost per firefighter is $390 and the state picks up 50% of the fee. There are 14 veteran firefighters with three new firefighters added.

Rich Seils, Assistant Fire Chief, discussed the new addition to the fire station will be a sign above the double doors on the building. The sign will be 4 feet by 20 feet with an amount not to exceed $1,000. Several quotes were received with the lowest bid being a local company. In his report he stated there were five calls, two smoke detectors, one fire alarm, one vehicle crash and assistance given to a Marinette call; Two new firefighters were already hired and there is one more in the interview process. The Department averages 80 calls per year and there were 110 calls in 2017. The highest volume of calls is usually vehicle crashes, secondly are trees down with or without power lines downed.

Supervisor 2 Mark Monnette added they are working on a grant for the Fire Department and it is nearing being finished. The grant is anticipated to be around $12,000 to be designated for the department.

Supervisor 3 Tom Holterman stated there is a problem with gravel spitting out on several of the town roads and he would like to see recycled blacktop put at these locations, including the intersections of Rader and Old Peshtigo Road, Schacht Road and County BB, Schacht Road and Old Peshtigo Road, Rehms Road and County D and Rader Road at the 90 degree curve. Wiedemeier asked the public if there were any other roads known to also be in need of blacktop repair and it was mentioned the corner of Little River Road and Krause Road.

Monnette commented there were complaints on the first winter plowing not being wide enough. In the beginning of winter in the first snow fall stages, if they swipe too wide it tears up the shoulders of the road and they error on the cautious side as to not damage them. Once the ground is frozen, then they can extend the width of their swipe and it wont damage the shoulders at that time.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, Feb. 20.
