Dr. Gregory L. Evensen

Issue Date: February 7, 2018

Dr. Gregory Lance Evensen, 67, of Mastodon Township/Crystal Falls, Mi., passed away Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018 at Florence Health Services.

Born March 10, 1950 in DeKalb, Ill., to Robert and Elizabeth "Betty" (Edwards) Evensen, with his father's Air Force career, the family moved to various locations. He attended Escanaba Public Schools, Appleton Schools, and graduated from Olathe, Ks. in 1968.

He served in the United States Army Reserves during the Vietnam War in 1968 and served until 1991. He was trained in counterintelligence, airborne, air assault and other specialized fields.

He also served with the 346th MP Escort Guards assigned to the 6th Army Group. He received many awards, including a Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation, United Nations Command and a Good Conduct Citation.

He earned a Bachelor of Education degree from Baker University in 1972, a Ph.D. degree in Criminal Justice from International University Kansas City, Mo. and London, England in 1980 and a master's degree in Educational Administration from Northern Michigan University in 1997.

He was appointed to the United States Secret Service as a Special Agent in 1974, worked as a Kansas State Highway Patrol Trooper and was the last City Marshal in Chase, Ks. He earned the highest medal for valor in Kansas history presented by Kansas Governor Bennett after a roadside rescue in 1975.

He also worked in education and administration, in 1978 as an assistant professor at Mid-America Nazerene University in Olathe, Ks. and taught both Northland Pine Schools in Eagle River and West Iron County School in Iron River, Mi.

He was an administrator for Wakefield Township Schools' Principal/ Superintendent and an Assistant/Principal at Bates Elementary School. He retired in 2013 from West Iron County Schools. His favorite events included leading the West Iron marching band on the football field, the Iron River parades and Memorial Day services.

An accomplished vocalist, he performed professionally in Europe and in sacred music concerts across America. His last appearance was with the Kansas City Symphony.

He was involved in founding several U.S. Constitution Groups and believed deeply in freedom, individual rights, and the Second Amendment.

He married Yvonne Smith on Oct. 20, 1980 in Escanaba and she preceded him in death in 1999. He then married Elizabeth Donalds on Dec. 30, 2000 at the Assembly of God Church in Kingsford.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; children, Benjamin Evensen of Eagle River, Jessica (Kristopher) Villarreal of Olathe, Ks., Rachael (William) Wagner of Rapid River, Nathan (Ashley) Anderson of Gladstone and Jessica (Brandon) Eden of Peshtigo; a brother, Jeff (Marie) Evensen of Kimberly; a sister, Pamela Pray of Appleton; 10 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Yvonne; a sister, Nancy Evensen; his step-father Ken Oskar and a brother-in-law, Jim Pray.

Visitation was held at Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain on Saturday, Feb. 4 from 1 p.m. until time of military rites at 3:50 p.m., followed by the funeral services at 4 p.m. Burial will be in the Spring.
