Coleman School Board To Elect Officers April 26

Issue Date: May 3, 2018

Coleman School Board will hold a special meeting on Thursday, April 26 to discuss some referendum items, including Financial Referendum Updates, Bonds, and Timeline, and approve an Insurance Company. There also will be election of board officers and committees, and approval of teacher and extra curricular contracts.

At its regular monthly meeting on Monday, April 16 Board Clerk Joanne Nowak swore in newly elected board members Scott Herzog, who is returning for another term and Corey Kuchta, who is new to the board.

District Administrator Doug Polomis also recognized Herzog for his 20 years of service to the district as a board member and presented him with a commemorative pen and pencil set. Nowak and Board Chair Ryan Wendt received recognition pins for their 10 years of service.

Polomis then read a letter from outgoing board member Barbara VanDrisse thanking the district for the past 3 years on the board, and declaring it had been a wonderful and eye opening experience.

Members present for the final meeting of the old board were Wendt, Nowak, Jeremy Hoida, Herzog, and Jamie Graetz. Barb Krause-Klug and VanDrisse were absent.

Yvette Marshall, Elementary/middle school Principal, reported the school had 24 middle school Choral students participate in Solo and Ensemble held in Lena. Middle school students of the month are: Stephanie Vasquez and Lincoln Henry. The Elm students are up to 80 million words read so well on their way to their goal. Summer school enrollment is at 154 students. With adding another swim session we have 44 students registered for session 1 and 43 registered for session 2. April 9-13 was severe weather awareness week and we participated in the statewide tornado drill on April 12. Administrative Assistants Day is April 25.

The spring music concerts will be on Tuesday, May 1. The choir starts the evening at 6:30 and the bands follow at 7:30 p.m.

Forward Exams were postponed from April 9 to April 16, and due to school being closed again on April 16, exams would begin the following day. This is a state exam for grades 3-8 and 10.

Polomis, reporting as High School Principal, congratulated Meghan Fraser, Stephanie Faudoa, and Faith King for qualifying the FBLA nationals which will be the end of June in Baltimore. He also thanked Miss Lahners and Mr. Brady for advising this group. Jeff VanDonderen, a past Coleman High School graduate, was a guest speaker on substance abuse for High School and 8th grade students on April 10. He thanked Mr. Skrupky and the area volunteers who helped organize and put on our Every 15 Minutes Program on April 11 and 12. The statewide tornado drill was April 12. High school teachers recently attend the spring summit at NWTC in Green Bay. This training will allow them to continue to instruct transcribed classes next year. He thanked Mrs. Delzer for being the forensics advisor and all team members advanced to the state meet on April 20 and 21. April 25 is Administrative Assistants Professional Day. The school will be hosting a blood drive on April 30 in the boardroom.

Prom is April 28 with the Grand March at 11 p.m.

On Tuesday, May 1 the spring choral and band concerts will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the high school gym.

State Solo/Ensemble Music Festival is May 5 at UWGB.

In his Superintendent's Report Polomis asked board members to attend the upcoming inservice on May 16 hosted by CESA 8.

Due to cancellations because of inclement weather days the last day of school will now be Friday June 1. In addition they are adding 10 minutes on to every school day effective Tuesday, April 17 begins at 7:55 a.m. and ends at 3:21 p.m.

At the Referendum-Kick off meeting at 8 a.m. Tuesday, April 17 representatives from Miron, Bray and the district were to go through a tentative timeline.

The PAC meeting of superintendents was on April 6th and we were made aware of professional development opportunities this summer. TRITON meeting will be April 25th and HLC Credentialing meeting is April 24th. At the Marinette County Sheriff's meeting on Wednesday, April 8 they were to address school safety and response.

Recently four Coleman staff members attended a two-day ALICE training for school safety in Luxemburg.

Staff Appreciation Week begins on Monday, May 7, and Polomis said ideally he would like to have an all staff cookout on Friday, May 11.

Each board member at the meeting received a copy of the canvassing of the referendum results, which Polomis said made him extremely happy. He thanked the board, administration, staff, and CFC committee for all their work to get to this point, and said he looks forward to the planning and completion of the projects that were approved in the referendum.

Polomis informed the board the contract with Bellin Health has been reviewed by the school's attorney and asked members if any of them had questions. He indicated we have had a very positive working relationship with Bellin and look forward to the future 3 years of this contract.

Polomis has been in contact with Eric Kass/NIS. Kass went out for bids and the following companies submitted: WEA, WCA, and Health Partners. Health Partners -5% for year one and a 2nd year cap of +7% for year 2. They were the cheapest however the coverage was less. WCA proposed a -4% for year one with cap of +9% in year 2. WEA is -4.5% with no commitment for year 2. He feels comfortable staying with WEA and that is his recommendation to the board.

Wendt thanked Polomis for going thru this process. Polomis inturned thank Mrs. Beland and Kass for their efforts with this project. Polomis also thanked the employees for being health conscious in their medical decisions.

Polomis and the Personnel Committee had met with Sarah Thomas and Tim Gould (CEA representatives) on April 5. The initial proposal presented was a 0% increase on base wage for certified staff for 2018-19. Thomas took this to the full CEA and it was ratified by the CEA on 4-13-18. Polomis is suggesting a 25 cent per hour wage increase for all support staff employees for the upcoming school year.

The board approved resignations of Sandra Hipke, Aide; Kris Lahners, Homecoming Advisor; Laurie St. Louis, Prom Co-Advisor; Cindi Wautier, Prom Co-Advisor, and Cindi Wautier, Junior Class Advisor.
