Joan Marie Larson, 88, passed away Sunday May 6, 2018 in Folsom, Ca.
Born June 21, 1930, in Menominee, Mi., to Carl "Cully" and Lucille Nelson, she grew up across the river in Marinette, the oldest of nine children and graduated from Lourdes HIgh School in 1948. In middle and high school years, she discovered her passion for singing and earned many awards throughout Wisconsin.
She married Dick Larson in 1949 and moved to Southern California to start their life together. She returned to school in the 1960s, attending American River College and in 1970 was in the first graduating class in their nursing program. She had a 20-year career as an RN in Folsom.
She is survived by three daughters, Christina (Ken) Kettleman, Cathy (Ray) Flohr and Claire McDonald; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; five sisters, Valeria LeBoeuf and Camille Loewecke, both of Menominee, Bianca (John) Anderla of Appleton, Cynthia Hanlon of Boron, Ca. and Merri (Raymond) Gansebom of Peshtigo; a brother, Peter (Cecelia) Nelson of Riverside, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Pat Nelson of Arvada, Co. and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Wayne "Dick" Larson and two brothers, Dennis and Carl "Bunny" Nelson.
A Memorial Mass will be held Tuesday, July 3 at Holy Spirit Church in Menominee, Mi. at 9 a.m., officiated by her nephew, Karl Kiser SJ of Ohio. Favorite hymns sung by Joan will be played at the Church. Burial will be next to her husband and close to her mother and father and the rest of the Nelson relatives at Forest Home Cemetery in Marinette.
