Dean E. Furton, 83, of Menominee, Mi., passed away Thursday, July 19, 2018 at The Renaissance in Marinette, surrounded by his family.
Born Aug. 12 in Macomb County, Mi. in 1934 to Fred and Lillian (Johnson) Furton, he moved to Menominee in 1939 and graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes High School in 1952.
He joined the United States Army in 1953 and served in the Korean Conflict with the Army Corps of Engineers. He was honorably discharged in November 1955.
In 1956, he married Carole Bromund at St. Ann's Church in Menominee and in 1961 he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics Education from Northern Michigan University. In 1969 he received a Master's Degree in Mathematics Education and taught in the Math Department at Menominee High School for 35 years.
In retirement, they wintered in Naples, Fla. He enjoyed fishing, country music and time at his cabin on the Menominee River with his family, but especially time with his grandchildren was most special.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carole; four sons, Fred (Susie), Marinette; Joel (Kim), Ogden, Ut. and Tony (Joanne) and Michael (Angela), both of Menominee; a daughter, Lynda (Jeff) Zuraski, Saginaw, Mi.; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren with a another expected in August and two sisters, Charlotte Jacobs and Claire Lynch.
Including his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Meryldine Peterson.
Visitation took place at Hansen Onion Martell Funeral Home in Marinette on Sunday, July 22 from 4 p.m. until time of a Vigil Prayer Service at 7 p.m., with Fr. Mark McQuesten presiding. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Monday, July 23 at 11 a.m., with Fr. Mark McQuesten presiding. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery in Menominee.
