Elizabeth Lucas (Betty Lou) (Larson) Roenfanz Geist, 92, formerly of Peshtigo, passed away Saturday, July 21, 2018 in Nashville, Tn.
Born April 18, 1926 in Peshtigo, she was the oldest daughter of Charles Larson and Elizabeth Northrup Larson.
She is survived by seven children, Karen (Hans) Roenfanz Seezen, Nashville, Tn., Karl Roenfanz, Evansville In., Karl Robert (Bob) Geist and Gary (Doris) Geist, both of Kearney, Ne., Tom Geist Lincoln, Ne., Helen Jean (Dan) Bakora, Tulsa, Ok. and Amy (John) Howard, Sebring, Fla.; 34 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Including her parents she was preceded in death by both husbands, Calvin Roenfanz and Karl Robert (Bob) Geist; three sisters, Mary Jane Newman, Claire Owen and Carol Larson and two sons, Dan Geist and Jim Geist.
After graduation from Peshtigo High School, she worked as a welder in a shipyard in Sturgeon Bay during World War II. Due to her small size, she was able to get into tight spaces below deck that others could not reach.
She and her daughter Karen (Kay) were among the last group of enlisted dependents to be allowed to move to occupied Germany where they lived from 1947-1948.
Her last job was as a caretaker of Hazelwood Historic Home in Green Bay, where the Wisconsin state constitution was drafted. On Dec. 21, 1982, she married Bob Geist in the parlor there, which was the first wedding held at Hazelwood since 1836. After moving to Omaha, Ne., she earned a Bachelors Degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1986.
Active in many church and civic organizations in Nebraska, including Kearney Woman's Club, Kearney Garden Club, Golden Kiwanis, VFW Auxilliary, Geneology Club and Faith United Methodist Women, she was president of many of them, including being Regent of the Ft. Kearney chapter of the DAR. Her greatest joy was as a wife, mother, and grandmother.
Memorial services with family were held in Kearney, Ne. and Guntersville, Al. on Saturday, July 28. Her ashes will be placed with her husband Bob Geist in Kearney at a later date. Nashville Cremation Center of Nashville, Tn. assisted the family with arrangements.
