THE CITY REBORN FROM THE ASHES OF AMERICA'S MOST DISASTROUS FOREST FIRE
John D. Compton
Issue Date: August 2, 2018
John Dean Compton, 88, of North Port, Fla., formerly of Menominee, Mi., passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2018 of natural causes after a short period of declining health, surrounded by family.
Born March 20, 1930 in Menominee, to John E. and Verdilla Compton, he graduated from Menominee High School where he excelled in football, swimming and hockey. He attended Carroll College and graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1955.
Upon completion of a family practice residency in 1956, he moved his family to Edgewood, Ia., where he was the only physician in the community for 37 years. A true general practitioner, he took care of all of the community's medical needs, from delivering babies, setting broken bones, treating diseases and making house calls.
Because of the rural setting of his practice and distance to the nearest pharmacy, he was given special privileges from the state of Iowa to dispense medicine directly from his office. Although remote, he stayed current in medical advances and diagnosed the first two cases of Lyme disease in the state of Iowa.
In retirement, they returned to Menominee in 1994, spending summers on Lake Michigan and winters in Boca Grande, Fla. fishing the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Florida became their full-time home where they moved to assisted living in 2016. A beloved husband and father, he was a dedicated physician, worked long hours, was a skilled fisherman and a treasured friend with a good sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carol; children, Karen Adamson (Mark) and Kathleen Compton, both of Minneapolis, Mn., Kristen Eich (Bruce) of Tempe, Az., John C. Compton (Jane) of Strawberry Point, Ia. and Jeffrey Compton (Julia) of Los Angeles Ca.; four grandchildren; extended family and many dear friends.
Memorials can be made to Friends of the Mississippi River, 101 E. Fifth St., Ste. 2000, St. Paul, Mn, 55101 and condolences can be sent to Karen Adamson, 12355 45th Place N. Plymouth, Mn., 55442
