Sauve, Dudka Win Marinette Co. Races

Issue Date: August 16, 2018

Barring a major surprise on November 6, voters in the Tuesday, Aug. 14 primary elections in Marinette, Oconto and Florence counties selected their sheriffs for four year terms starting in January of 2019. All had competition on the Republican Party primary ballot with no contenders on the Democratic Party Ticket.

In Marinette County, incumbent Sheriff Jerry M. Sauve defeated challenger Deputy Fred Popp by a narrow 204 vote margin. There were 2,872 ballots cast for Sauve and 2,668 for Popp.

In the other contest for Marinette County office, incumbent Clerk of Circuit Court Sheila M. Dudka, with 2,598 votes squeaked by challenger Carrie Brazeau, with 2,545 votes, to win return to office by a 53-vote margin. There was no candidate on the Democratic party ticket.

Marinette county Clerk Kathy Brandt has convened the Board of Canvassers to certify elections results at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16 in the Annex Conference Room on the first floor of the Courthouse Annex. The notice states it may be necessary for the Board of Canvassers to re-convene to count, tally and/or reject any late arriving absentee and/or provisional ballots received after election day. Board of Canvassers includes Cindy Gressel, Kathy Thill and Sally Witak.

In Oconto County, long-time Sheriff Mike Jansen is retiring when his term ends in January. Jansen has served 40 years with the Oconto County Sheriffs Department, the last 16 as Sheriff. Voters selected Deputy Todd Skarban to succeed him by a two to one vote margin over Chief Deputy Ed Janke, who had been endorsed by Jansen. Tallies were 4,504 vote for Skarban to 2,144 for Janke. Janke has been chief deputy in Oconto County for the past two years. Prior to that he had been director of public safety for the Village of Howard, and served 20 years with the Brown County Sheriff's Department, five of them as chief deputy.

Skarban has been an Oconto County deputy for 19 of his 20 years in law enforcement, and has been handler of a canine officer with the Oconto County Sheriff's Department for the last 14 years.

In Florence County, Dan Miller, an Aurora resident who currently serves as a detective with the Marinette County Sheriff's Department will be the new sheriff. He drew 881 votes in the primary election, compared to 444 votes for his opponent, David Gribble.

At the present time, Gribble is Chief Deputy with the Florence County Sheriff's Department. Miller serves as Coordinator for the Marinette and Menominee County Crime Stoppers organization, and is certified as a Fire Investigation Technician and is trained in financial crime investigation and is an affiliate member of the Wisconsin Department of Justice task force on Internet Crimes Against Children.

Current Florence County Sheriff Jeff Rickaby will retire at the end of this year after nearly three decades on the job. He has served as sheriff there since 1989, making him the longest-serving sheriff in the state at this time.

Statewide, incumbent Governor Scott Walker defeated challenger Robert Meyer by a 417,654 to 38,353 margin to be the Republican Party candidate for governor in November. If elected, Walker will be serving his third term as governor. In Marinette county, Walker drew 4,491 votes to 806 fo Meyer.

In November, he will face Tony Evers, long-time Superintendent of Schools in Wisconsin. Evers drew 224,544 votes, 44.75 percent of the total, topping a field of 10 candidates seeking to be the Democratic Party nominee for governor.

Leah Vukmir won a close race to become the Republican Party candidate for United States Senate, defeating her closest competitor, Kevin Nicholson, 217,023 to 190,040. Vukmir will compete against Democratic party incumbent Tammy Baldwin in November.

Mandela Barnes won the Democratic party nomination for Lieutenant Governor with 326,133 votes to 153,272 votes for Kurt J. Kober.

Incumbent Secretary of State Doug La Follette won the Democratic Party slot against challenger Arvina Martin, 326,618 to 168,765.

The Democratic Party candidate for State Treasurer will be Sarah Godlewski, who drew 200,540 votes, defeating Dawn Marie Sass, 149,000, and Cynthia Kaump, 112,195.
