Dean E. Nelson, 76, of Marinette, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2018 at home.
Born March 9, 1942, to the late Louis and Vivian (Olson) Nelson in Marinette, he graduated from Marinette High School in 1960. On July 30, 1966, he married Doreen "Kay" McDonald at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Menominee, Mi. He served in the United States Navy during the Cuban Crisis and was proud of his son Mike achieving rank of Senior Chief in the Navy.
After service, he worked in maintenance for the Marinette School District for over 30 years, retiring in 2001. A life member of the Marinette Elk's Lodge, he was appointed Fellow of the Marinette Moose Lodge, belonged to the American Legion, and was a prior member of Marinette Jaycees.
An avid fisherman and hunter, he enjoyed camping on the river at the Moose Lodge for many years, going to country music festivals, building decks and was known for his sense of humor and Speedo's.
He is survived by his wife, Kay of Marinette; a daughter, Dina (Rocky) VanGilder of Birchwood; a son, Mike (Tina) Nelson of Hatley; a sister, Joanne Paine of Lynnfield, Ma.; two brothers, Wayne Nelson of Bay City, Mi. and Lee (Vickie) Nelson of Eagle; a granddaughter; a step-grandson; many nieces and nephews and best friends, Jim and Chris Mayou.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Butler.
A Celebration of Life (including Hamm's beer) will be held at the Moose Lodge on Sunday, Sept. 9 from noon to 3 p.m., with a luncheon beginning at 1 p.m. Services will be held at 3 p.m., followed by Military Honors by the Military 20 Year Club and US Navy. Thielen Funeral Home of Marinette is assisting the family with arrangements.
