Ailsa PayantIssue Date: August 23, 2018
Ailsa Payant, 94, Wausaukee /Manitowoc passed away peacefully at Manitowoc Health and Rehabilitation on Monday, August 6, 2018.
Ailsa was born on January 31, 1924, in Cairns, Australia to the late Fredrick and Mary (Breen) Mazlin.
Ailsa was very proud of her Australian heritage. She had wonderful memories of growing up on the ocean. While working for the United States government on an army base in Australia, she met a handsome American, Captain Vital (Bud) Payant.
They were married at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Brisbane, Australia on February 20, 1945. A year later, they came to live in Wausaukee, Wisconsin, which is where they raised their family. Bud's parents and family quickly became her family and were very loved by her.
For the past 4-1/2 years Ailsa resided in Manitowoc. She loved her apartment at Southbrook Manor and made many wonderful friends there.
Our mom was a soft-spoken person, but had a gift for connecting with people, both young and old alike. Mom cherished time with her family. A highlight of her recent years was a visit from her nephew, John, from Australia, who she had not seen in 60 years. They had a wonderful reunion in Manitowoc. We will miss her greatly, but know she is with our Dad.
Ailsa is survived by her son, John (Roberta) Payant Antioch, IL; three daughters, Susan (Daniel) Sadowski, Glenview, IL, Mary (Earl) Horntvedt, Manitowoc and Ann (Norm) Marlatt, Crivitz; seven grandchildren, John (Kelley), Jacqueline (Vincent), Brian (Hayley), Josh, Nicole, Jana (David) and Meghan. She is further survived by nine great-grandchildren, Jack, Reese, Vincent, Grace, John Paul, Ava, Bo, Claire and Eloise and two nephews, John and Bruce McDonald, Australia.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Vital and a sister, Norma (Mac) McDonald.
Friends may call at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 1121 N. 14th St., Manitowoc from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Friday, August 24. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11a.m. with Rev. Jose Lopez presiding. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Wausaukee on Saturday, August 25 at 11 a.m.
Special thanks to the physician assistants, nurses, CNAs and events coordinator in Cozy Corner at Manitowoc Health and Rehabilitation who cared for our mom and took the time to get to know her. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be sent to St. Jude's Hospital or Catholic Charities. Roubal Funeral Home of Wausaukee, WI is assisting the family.
