THE CITY REBORN FROM THE ASHES OF AMERICA'S MOST DISASTROUS FOREST FIRE
West Shore Museum Ice Cream Social Sept. 2
Issue Date: August 29, 2018
West Shore Fishing Museum will host its annual Ice Cream Social on Sunday, Sept. 2 from noon to 4 p.m. (CST). The event features a huge selection of delicious homemade pies, brats, hot dogs, root beer, ice cream, and root beer floats. Donations of homemade fruit pies to support the event are welcome.
Linda and Company will provide live music featuring guitar, keyboard, accordion, and drums. The combo plays a variety of music including country, blues, and older rock tunes.
The vintage Gift Shop is stocked with many newly arrived treasures. Perennial plants are available for sale, along with advice from a Master Gardener. A play area is set aside for children, with the appearance this year of Chocolate Chip, a miniature pony. More than 80 prizes will be raffled off starting at 3 p.m. A variety of antique vehicles will be on display in the yard.
The popular event and the museum celebrate life on Green Bay waters and shores in the 19th and 20th centuries, focusing on commercial fishing, a major industry in the region. The restored Bailey home, exhibit buildings, commercial fishing boat displays, gardens, and improved nature trails provide a pleasant and relaxing step back into local history.
West Shore Fishing Museum is both a Michigan Registered Historic Site and a part of the Great Lakes Fisheries Heritage Trail. It displays five commercial fishing boats including the fully restored gill net boat Kate A. and the more modern trap net boat Mary Kay.
There is no admission or parking charge. Most of the museum and grounds are handicapped accessible. The museum operates largely on the funds raised at this yearly event and on donations and memberships. It is located off Highway M-35 at Bailey Park, 15 miles north of Menominee or 7 miles south of Cedar River. Drive into Bailey Park and then go north on the shady lane into the museum grounds.
