Peshtigo School Board Views Tentative Budget

Issue Date: October 18, 2018

At the Peshtigo School Board meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 10 High School Special Education Director Dan Vanidestine and High School Principal Chad Sodini presented information about a newly established alternative learning school at Peshtigo High School, and Elementary Principal Kelly Collins shared the annual Achievement Gap Reduction (AGR) goals. AGR replaced SAGE four years ago and provides districts with alternatives to maintaining class sizes of less than 18 to 1.

The board approved the preliminary budget for 2018-2019 as recommended by District Administrator Patrick Rau, who advised that the revenue limit calculations are still estimates at this time, as they are waiting for final calculations of private school vouchers and state aid. An estimated summary of the cash defeasance was included in the board packet. The early estimate is a savings of $34,775, but a more precise calculation will be available when the revenue limit calculation is finalized, Rau said. The annual meeting and budget hearing are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29, and copies of the proposed budget are available for public inspection in the district office. The budget provides tentatively for a school tax levy of $3,355,143, up 13.18 percent from the unaudited total of $2,964,553 for last year, which was down 8 percent from the 2016-2017 school year. However, this is tentative pending final state aid figures. Proposed expenditures for 2018-2019 are $15,106,015, up 6.09 percent from last year.

The sole student application for the spring Early College Credit Program (ECCP) was approved. District Administrator Patrick RAu explained ECCP has replaced Youth Options due to a change in state statutes. The program is essentially the same as Youth Options, in which students are able to take post-secondary courses for which the district does not have a comparable course offering.

Resignation of Joshua Greetan as the Middle School Wrestling Coach was accepted, as was a motion to approve him as a volunteer wrestling coach.

On Rau's recommendation permission for an extended medical leave for a staff member was approved as requested.

Also approved was establishment of a Flex Spending Account at Peshtigo National Bank that had been requested by Finance Director Sarah Swanson and was recommended for approval by Rau. Rau explained the new account will allow their third-party vendor to draw flex spending dollars upon request, and having the separate account will allow Mrs. Swanson to accurately and efficiently monitor the account activity.

The meeting agenda had provided for possible approval of board goals for 2018-2019, but action was delayed until the annual meeting on Oct. 29.

The board voted without dissent to accept donations of $2,000 from the PTSO for volleyball inserts in the new PELC gym floor, $800 from the PTSO for equipment for the PELC Makerspace rooms, $250 from the PTSO for PBIS and $1,607.04 from the Kevin Nischke Memorial Fund for the football program.

Changes in a long list of policies were approved as recommended by Rau and the Policies Committee. All had been approved at first readings last month and were unchanged except for a few grammatical corrections, Rau said.

The policies were:
