Daniel Orland Lynch, 77, passed away Friday, Oct. 12, 2018.
Born Oct. 21, 1940 in Menominee, Mi., to Bernard and Helen (Wagner) Lynch, he grew up on a farm near McAllister and graduated with honors from Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Marinette in 1958. He attended Marinette Teachers college for two years and then received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Oshkosh State College in 1962.
While there, he met his wife of 55 years, Dolores Flasch and they married Nov. 24, 1962 and had four children Shawn, Gregory, Laura and Sarah. He taught Middle School Science and Math in Ripon for two years before attending UW-Madison, where he earned a PHD in Educational Psychology in 1968.
He then taught at UW-Oshkosh as a professor in the College of Education and Human Services from 1968 until retiring in 1999.
His main interest was working to prevent smoking by youths. He did research on patterns of youthful smoking in the late 80s, which moved him to organize the Winnebago County Tobacco Free Coalition in 1992. They worked toward passage of new legislation and enforcement of existing bans on smoking on school grounds. This was of interest to him for many years after he retired.
A member of St. Raphaels parish, Knights of Columbus, Serra Club for the promotion of vocations and Candlelight club, he also supported United Cerebral Palsy and the United Way. He loved science and nature and enjoyed hunting for morel mushrooms in the spring and watching the bright reds of the sugar maples in the fall.
An avid reader, he loved to discuss the books he read and treasured time with family and friends, especially the Lynch Family Reunions and playing sheepshead with the Flaschs.
He is survived by a daughter Sarah (Andrew) Olson of Cross Plains; a son-in-law, Roger Hinze; a daughter-in-law, Susan Landers-Lynch; four grandchildren; five brothers; three sisters; 11 brothers and sisters-in-law and many nieces; nephews and other relatives.
Including his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Dolores Lynch; two sons, Shawn Lynch and Gregory Lynch; a daughter, Laura Hinze and a brother, Timothy Lynch.
Visitation and support will be held for the family at St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church, 830 S. Westhaven Drive in Oshkosh on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. until time of a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Rev. Fr. Tom Long will be celebrant with burial in St. Isadore Catholic Cemetery in Clyman.
