Fire Scene-Over thirty-five firefighters from five area departments battled a stubborn duplex fire in downtown Crivitz on Saturday, Nov. 17. The Crivitz Fire Dept. received the alarm at 4:15 p.m. according to Luke Deschane, Crivitz Fire Chief. Deschane called for a MABAS box alarm to the second level to get departments from surrounding communities to help fight the blaze. No injuries were reported but the building and contents is considered a total loss. Cause of the fire is under investigation by the Crivitz Fire Dept. Fire Destroys Duplex in Downtown CrivitzIssue Date: November 21, 2018 A fire in downtown Crivitz late in the afternoon of Saturday, Nov. 17 destroyed a 2-family duplex home. Cause of the fire has not yet been determined, according to Crivitz Fire Chief Luke Deschane. Tthe building and all its contents were lost, Deschane said, but there were no injuries.
The blaze brought at least 35 firefighters from five area fire departments to the the dwelling on Park Place, the former alleyway which runs between the Crivitz Library rear entrance and Crivitz Veterans Memorial Community Park and behind The Nuthatch and Kay's Cut and Curl on County W.
Deschane said his department was called at about 4:15 p.m. Considering the time of day and temperatures in the teens, Deschane said the MABAS Alarm call was sent out almost immediately for backup from other units. Firefighters remained on the scene until 1:30 a.m., and eventually Crivitz was the last to leave.
Eventually there were firefighters and equipment from Crivitz, Wausaukee, Town of Lake, Village of Coleman and Grover/Porterfield and Middle Inlet on the scene, as well as Crivitz and Twin Bridge Rescue Squads, Bay Area Medical Center Rescue Unit, Crivitz Village Police and officers from Marinette County Sheriff's Department.
The upstairs tenants in the building were not at home when the fire was discovered. The fire started in the lower unit, Deschane said. The elderly couple who lived in the lower unit were at home with some visitors but got out safely. Village President John Deschane opened the Village Hall to give them a warm place to stay temporarily, and then made arrangements with Newcare to provide a room for the couple.
The dwelling, which is owned by John Obuchowski, and all contents were a total loss. All belongings of both occupant families were destroyed. Cause remains undetermined. Dollar value of the home and contents also had not been determined.
Deschane said the second level was unaccessible to fire fighters and before it ended, the entire structure was engulfed, "and there was fire burning in every room of that building."
As the blaze began to wind down fire departments left the scene one by one, with Crivitz firefighters being the last to go.
Park Place was barricaded from the Iceburg intersection on the west side to its north exit onto County W. Personnel remained on watch at the scene. The barricades were not removed until the Sheriff's Department investigation was completed on Sunday afternoon.
On behalf of Crivitz Fire Department, Deschane expressed thanks to everyone who helped, including Crivitz firefighters and firefighters from Village of Wausaukee Fire, Middle Inlet Fire, Town of Lake Fire, Town of Wagner Fire, Grover Porterfield Fire, Coleman Fire, personnel from Crivitz Rescue, Twin Bridge Rescue, and Bay Area Medical Rescue, officers from Crivitz Police and Marinette County Sheriff's Department, and personnel in Marinette County's 911 Emergency Dispatch Center for their work in contacting everyone and coordinating the efforts. He also thanked Newcare for providing a place for the couple to stay after their home and belongings were destroyed.
