Verona Mae "Ronnie" (Brazeau) Carlson, 89, of Gillett, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2019, surrounded by family.
Born Dec. 19, 1929 in Kelly Lake, to the late Sam and Mary (Miller) Brazeau, she graduated from Gillett High School and a was a lifetime resident of the area. She married Frederick "Fritz" Carlson at Christ Lutheran Church-Hintz on April 10, 1948 and they raised four children.
An active member of the community, she was instrumental in starting the Youth Government Day in Oconto County and remained active from 1969 to 2014, helped organize the Carlson Family Reunion from 1973 to present and was a bowling league member for over 35 years.
She also spent 27 years with the Northern Gardeners, handled blood mobile registrations for 25 years and drove the elderly to the Gillett Meal Site for over 20 years.
In earlier years, she took organ lessons at Henri's Music in Green Bay and a small group of ladies taking lessons was formed. They played together for many years and she still played the organ until August of 2018.
She cooked for many years at the former American Legion Hall and was a longtime active member with the Ladies Legion Auxiliary for 53 years, including positions of historian, Secretary/ Chaplin and later President for 15 years. She also distributed poppies for over 30 years, was a Life Member of the VFW, serving over 35 years and also was president. She placed flags for veterans at area cemeteries on Memorial Day for the Legion Auxiliary and the American Legion for over 23 years.
A longtime, devoted member of Christ Lutheran Church-Hintz, she served with the Ladies Aide for over 50 years, kept baptismal records for over 27 years, began doing Medallions for the babies and was pleased to serve as Grand Marshal of the Gillett Fourth of July Parade in 2016.
She had a deep love of family, enjoyed crocheting, gave many gifts of her handiwork to family and friends and made "the best chocolate chip cookies"!
Survivors include four children, Tom (Karen) Carlson, Jane (Bruce) Kitzman, LouAnn (Ervin) Lambrecht and Sheryl (Roger) Peterson; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a sister, Bernice Christiansen; two sisters-in-law, Alberta Brazeau and Lenea Carlson; two brothers-in-law, Everett Carlson and Penny Nicholas and many other relatives and friends.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fritz on Aug. 24, 1996; a granddaughter, Abbey; two sisters, Agnes and Jean; a brother, Buck and her husbands' siblings, Ray Carlson, Lois Nicholas and June Carlson.
Friends and relatives called on the family on Tuesday, March 5 at Legacy Funeral Chapels in Gillett from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Visitation continued at Christ Lutheran Church-Hintz in Gillett on Ash Wednesday, March 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Pastor Michael Paholke officiated with interment in Wanderer's Rest Cemetery in Gillett.
