Helen Marie Schanke, 87, of Appleton, formerly of Neenah and Amberg, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2019 where she lived at Appleton Retirement Community.
Born April 15, 1931, to Corty Leland and Sofia (Halderson) Skattebo in Valders, where she attended school, after graduation, she worked at Valders Grainary and Miro Aluminum Company. On May 5, 1952, she married Elmer Schanke and they were together for 61 years.
A stay at home mom, she returned to work in 1966 at Elm Tree/Rich's Bakery as a store manager until 1981. From 1982 to 1985 she was employed at Kelly Services and worked at several companies in the Fox Valley.
In 1969, they built their cottage in Amberg where they spent 20 years of retirement and made Amberg their home. In retirement she was a medical escort for Elderly Services in Marinette County, where she made many friends.
She enjoyed poetry, crocheting, knitting and different crafts using plastic canvas and yarn, but mostly making her popular "pocket crosses". She also enjoyed fishing, cribbage and solitaire, telling stories especially of her children, but mostly time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always looking for her hugs and kisses.
She is survived by eight children, Wanda (Chuck) Dorn, Vera (Gary) Miller, Steve Schanke, Cherie (Schanke) Scott, Jeffrey (Donna Clinton) Schanke, Peggy Schanke, Herbert (Diane) Schanke and George Schanke; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; her parents, Sofia and Olvin Skattebo; her paternal father, Corty Skattebo; three brothers, Sylvan, Leon and Orley; two sisters, Marie and Doris; a son-in-law, Dennis Scott; a granddaughter, Amber Schanke and a grandson, Scott Miller.
Visitation was held at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Neenah on Monday, April 15 from 9 a.m. until time of a Memorial Service at 11 a.m. Wichmann Fargo Funeral Home and Crematory of Appleton assisted the family with arrangements.
