Richard Paul "Dick" Matty, 86, of Crivitz, passed away peacefully Easter morning April 21, 2019 at Rennes West Nursing Home, Peshtigo.
He was born Sept 16, 1932 in Menominee, Michigan to Paul F. and Veronica (Wirkus) Matykowski. Dick graduated from Crivitz High School, Class of 1950. He enlisted and served his country in the U.S. Army and later in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. In August of 1953, Richard was united in marriage to Sandra Borman in Marinette.
The couple moved back to Crivitz from South Dakota in Sept of 1954. Dick owned and operated Matty's Steak House for 25 years and Matty's Cheese House for seven years. Here he developed Matty's Salad Dressing.
Dick was very active in Wisconsin and in his community. He served eight terms in the Wisconsin State Legislator 88th Assembly District and was a member of many committees including committees on Veterans and Military Affairs, Tourism, Highways and Insurance. He also served on the Governors Highway Safety Council for ten years.
Dick was a member and past president of Northeastern Wisconsin Conservation Alliance and was a member of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress where he served as vice president for three years as well as a member of the Executive Council for six years.
Locally, Dick was a member of St Mary's Catholic Parish in Crivitz, Scout Master of Troop 58, Crivitz, member and past president of the Crivitz Lions Club and the Crivitz Recreation Association. He dedicated more than 60 years as an active member of the Crivitz American Legion and served as a life member of the Amvets and VFW and as District Commander of the Amvets.
He was also Marinette County Coroner for five years. He retired as a public servant as Director of Wisconsin Tourism. He retired from the private sector at age 70 as Public Relations Director for Lake of the Torches Casino.
Richard is survived by his wife of more than 65 years, Sandra; seven children, Richard Paul, David Joseph, Rochelle Marie, Rhonda Jo, Michael Harvey, Scott Anthony and Kerry Lynn; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
Dick was preceded in death by an infant daughter and his parents.
Friends may call at St Mary's Catholic Church, 808 Henrietta Ave, Crivitz, on Thursday May 2, 2019 from 9 to 11 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Church with the Rev Frederick Sserugga officiating.
