Frances I. Namik
Issue Date: June 6, 2019
Frances "Frannie" Irene (Sharkus) Namik, 75, of Eden Prairie, Mn., passed away Thursday, May 9, 2019, after a brief struggle with cancer.
Born in Menominee, Mi., she later moved to Milwaukee, where she met her husband, Sahir "Sam" F. Namik and they married on April 18, 1970. They made their home in Eden Prairie where they devoted their time to their extended families, neighborhood friends and business, Advanced Mailing Systems.
They raised three Shih Tzus: Sundance, Max and Sparky. In 2002, after 31 years of marriage and shortly after the sale of their business, her husband lost his battle with cancer.
With no children in God's plan, they invested in their friends and family and maintained many lifelong long-distance friendships through frequent phone calls and visits.
She was a force of nature, honest, direct, nurturing, funny, a good listener who gave sound and thought out advice, recalled stories of nieces, nephews and neighborhood families and was concerned for those struggling to balance work and family.
She attended the American Academy of Medical Dental Technology where she became a registered dental assistant and was in training to be a police detective when she met her husband. After marriage, she focused on caring for him, their home and dogs and never pursued either of those careers.
A member of the Aqua Fitness Groups at LifeTime Fitness and the Eden Prairie Community Center, she was a skilled shopper, was able to find treasures, had a sense for fashion and enjoyed casino trips.
She is survived by a brother, Patrick (Linda) Sharkus; two sisters, Eleanor VanWinkle and Mary (Rellen) Chernetski; a sister-in-law, Shirley Bailey; four nieces; eight nephews and many friends, including, Kay Bergmann, Sandy Collins, Donna Dick, Barb Hallowell, Sue Kelly, Ann Mott and Kathy Williams who supported her independence during her illness.
Besides her parents, Mabel and Frank Sharkus, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sam; a brother, Elroy Bailey and a brother-in-law, Allen "Rip" VanWinkle.
A special Memorial Service will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Menominee on Sunday, June 9 at 1 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at Menominee Legion Post, 1st Street in Menominee. A casual gathering of Aqua members and a few close friends will also take place on her birthday, Wednesday, June 12 in Excelsior, Mn.
