THE CITY REBORN FROM THE ASHES OF AMERICA'S MOST DISASTROUS FOREST FIRE
Lena's 1st Dirt City Duel Has Successful Weekend
Issue Date: July 31, 2019
The Inaugural Dirt City Duel Sportsman short-course off-road event was held July 26, 27 and 28 in Lena. The two days of racing at this brand-new facility saw over 165 MORR Sportsman racers entertain over 10,000 spectators during the two days of competition.
The weekend was part of the Lucas Oil Midwest Short Course series that saw ten different classes compete each day as teams from seven states and Canada were looking to add precious points to their quest for a season long class championship.
The Lena Motorsports Club broke ground just over one year ago. During that time a group area residents and business owners came together to create a venue that rivals other permanent off-road facilities when it comes to amenities for both the racer and the spectator.
Initially the Dirt City Duel was scheduled to be the first event for Dirt City, but the progress on 100-acre facility was going so well, Johnny Greaves was able to bring his SXS Sports series to the grounds for an early May event. That weekend went well, and it was a great test for the season's, main event, the Dirt City Duel.
The .75 mile long off-road layout has a combination of jumps, elevation changes as well as split lane section that keep drivers always "up on the wheel." The "Hot Pit" area is even right in front of the spectator area making for easy access for team as well as great viewing for the fans.
The main spectator area consists of a small ridge that runs along the west side of the track allowing the fans to view the entire track. There is even a Handicapped Pavilion allowing easy access and great viewing as well. The use of steel shipping containers creates the concession area, announcers' booth, spotters' stand and a VIP viewing section. The Pit Area and Campground area is large enough to handle both weekend racers as well as fans that want to spend the weekend.
As mentioned, the Dirt City Duel was a Sportsman Short-Course event that was Rounds 5 and 6 of the Lucas Oil Midwest Short-Course series. The racer turnout was one of the best so far this season. After two days of competition, the competitors had nothing but high praise for the Dirt City Motorplex crew. The fan support was incredible. The crowds met expectations which has the facility looking to expand the spectator area for next year.
"From our exit survey, over 2,000 spectators mentioned that this was their first off-road race," noted Lena Motorsports Club president Don Demeny. "That number is big with us, to sustain and grow our facility we must introduce new fans to the sport."
After everything settles, the Dirt City team will evaluate the weekend and begin planning for the second annual Duel in the Dirt.
Thanks goes out to all the volunteers, the Town of Lena, MORR and its racers as well as the businesses and companies that made the Duel in the Dirt possible.
