From Our Readers

Issue Date: September 26, 2019

Letter to Editor:

The sound of one hundred motorbikes riding down 1st Street in Menominee this summer warmed our hearts and filled us with gratitude. The Triple C Riders get on their bikes the Saturday of the Waterfront Festival to raise money for local charities. This is a ride that takes them through Marinette and Menominee counties with stops along the way where they participate in raffles to raise money for several area charities including the St Vincent de Paul food pantry.

This ride has supported our food pantry for over five years. In these five years, our food pantry has seen over 40,000 visits. We are so thankful for each rider who participates. You have personally helped relieve a lot of stress for people in our community who are in a crisis and struggling to make ends meet. Thank you for that.

Kalyani Grasso

Executive Director,

St Vincent de Paul Society of Marinette

Dear Editor:

This letter will correct Dale Anderson's false claims printed by the by the Marinette Paper on Sept. 20. Hmmm?  He and Aquila both got False Claims printed there recently. NO, THEY DO NOT HAVE ALL THE PERMITS.  NO, THEY WILL NOT BE MINING NEXT YEAR.  It's more likely than ever now that they'll never mine this site, with their dangerous design plan.

Dale Anderson suggests to "plan ahead" and "be prepared".  Aquila has not planned ahead for the catastrophic disaster they will cause if allowed to mine here.  They are not prepared to pay for their Acid Mine Drainage clean up either.  They say they don't need to because they have ൝st century mining". Huh!

The International Council on Mining and Metals CEO posted his sadness for the preventable loss of life that resulted from the recent tailings dam collapse in Brazil.  He wrote "we support our industry in seeking to avoid such an event from happening again."  Aquila applied to use this same cheapest but worst kind of up-stream tailings dam. Even their own industry's council no longer approves of that type. Brazil has now banned them.  Yet, they proposed putting the very worst, most often catastrophically failing, forever toxic tailings dam 50 yards from the Menominee River.

A Minnesota court has ordered a suspension of PolyMet's  mine and dam safety permits until the DNR conducts a review of the Brazilian mine tailings disaster.  Michigan could be next, we're working on it!

"Day by day the mine gets closer to"" bankruptcy, not closer to opening.  This operation has produced nothing, in over 15 years of trying.  Investors lose trust and patience, and the ongoing lawsuits cost money.  Appeals to court decisions could ratchet up costs for another decade.

No one in the Coalition to Save the Menominee River believes this mine will ever operate here. He has not printed facts.

The people here with a vision for our future, including hundreds of potentially affected voters surveyed, envision a clean Menominee County, River, Shakey Lakes, land, air, ground water, cultural/heritage sites, and a healthy population.  That is our choice.

Natalie Lashmet,

Menominee

Editor:

Time for congress to "meddle" for Americans, instead of wasting time.

Impeachment again? When will congress start working on helping All Americans, instead of themselves? The current Ukrainian so called Crisis, if in fact it happened, describes the same action the Obama administration actually demonstrated when the American Embassy gave the new Ukrainian government an unprecedented list of people "not to investigate" in 2016. Also, a March 2018 Joe Biden video describing how he got a Ukrainian prosecutor removed, is proof of that.

So why impeachment when there is so much to do?

The trade bill between Canada, Mexico, and the United States was agreed upon by all parties last November? The Trump USMCA helps Wisconsin farmers, specifically Dairy. Yet Pelosi will not bring the USMCA to the House floor for Congress to pass? Too busy?

The President pushed ahead, got the beef tariffs lifted by the Japanese. This week China bought 600,000 bushels of Soybeans. The contrast between the Congressional Democrats and their lack of concern, stands in stark contrast to what President Trump is accomplishing, despite Congress.

Warning to Democrats. When you hurt Americans, they do not forget. Start doing your job. And that job is helping Americans, not uprooting previous elections for flimsy reasons.

Gerry Wrench,

Marinette
