Gordon M. Johnson, 93, of Menominee, Mi., passed away Friday, Nov. 22, 2019, with family by his side holding his hand at Aurora Medical Center in Marinette.
Born April 19, 1926 in Ambrose, N.D., to Rev Orlando and Bergetta Sophia Johnson, his childhood years were spent in ministry along with his parents, living in Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Dakota. His favorite home was the family homestead out on the prairie near Wilton, N.D. and time with his North Dakota relatives.
Around eight years of age, he felt God calling him to full-time ministry. He graduated from Wilton High School and then attended Capital Commercial College, graduating with a diploma in accounting. In 1945 he was drafted by the United States Army during World War II and was stationed at Fort Snelling until the war ended. He then attended North Central Bible College in Minneapolis and graduated with a degree in Pastoral Studies. In his senior year, he met Hildred Lou Johnson of Wisconsin Dells and they married on June 14, 1952.
They traveled for two years in Evangelistic Ministry and then served the Assembly of God Church in Black River Falls for 36 years. They also ministered in Cataract for a few years. He had a live radio program called Morning Meditations that touched many lives for 33 years and aired the first Saturday the radio station was on the air.
He served for 24 years on the District Board of Presbyters of the Wisconsin Northern Michigan District of the Assemblies of God and was made an honorary Presbyter. Upon retirement, they moved to Menominee and served as interim pastors in White Lake and Beecher, filling in at various Churches. They were members of Lakeside Assembly of God where he served as treasurer for many years.
He loved to travel, loved being with family and friends and enjoyed fishing and watching the Green Bay Packers. A quiet man who had a Pastor's heart, he loved God and people, was known as a man of prayer, loved to visit people and was a friend and pastor to many. In retirement, he ministered to many people by phone.
He is survived by two sons, Rev James (Leisa) Johnson of San Jose, Ca. and Roger (Marcia) Johnson of Eagan, Mn.; a daughter, Melodee (Rev Herb) Kolenda of Menominee, Mi.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren with one on the way; a sister, Genevieve Johnson; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Johnson and many nieces; nephews and cousins.
Including his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Hildred Lou; a brother, Harvey and a brother-in-law ,Gordon C. Johnson.
Friends may call at Anderson Kell Funeral Home in Menominee on Thursday, Dec. 5 with visitation from 5 p.m. until time of a Memorial Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Saturday, Dec. 7 at Family Worship Center in Black River Falls from noon until time of the service at 2 p.m., followed by a luncheon. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery in Wisconsin Dells on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to Fishnet Outreach or Kingdom Encounters International.
