Meyers Receives State VFW Middle School Teacher Award
Issue Date: February 13, 2020
At a ceremony in Green Bay on Saturday, Feb. 1, Crivitz Middle School teacher Brett Meyers received the Smart/Maher Wisconsin VFW Middle School Teacher of the Year award from State VFW Commander, Donald Lynch.
For the last three years, he has been the driving force behind the VFW's Patriot's Pen essay contest, sponsored locally by Crivitz Memorial VFW Post 2063. Mary Paitrick, commander of the post, was so impressed with his dedication to the contest that she decided he would be a great candidate for the Teacher of the Year award.
Meyers said that his goal in encouraging the students to participate in the essay contest was for them to learn about the contributions of military veterans and how their sacrifices translate to the freedoms that the students enjoy today. He wants them to realize the familiar saying of "Freedom isn't Free". He believes that all citizens need to love and appreciate the opportunities that have been provided for them.
Meyers award packet was submitted to the VFW District 8 committee where he topped nominees from area VFW posts. His packet was then forwarded to the state level, where he beat out nominees from the other nine state districts. He will now compete at the national level.
