Peshtigo Chamber Receives $40,000 Kayak Launch Grant

The Peshtigo Area Chamber of Commerce in keeping with its mission statement of promoting responsible business development, tourism and growth in the overall best interest of the Peshtigo area through services and representation of the business community, is excited to announce that they have received an award letter from the Fox River/Green Bay Natural Resource Trustee Council of a submitted grant composed by the grant writing team requesting financial assistance for the ADA compliant Kayak Launch Dock and ADA compliant Fishing Pier project to be located on the Peshtigo River in the City of Peshtigo. The awarded grant is a 50% matching allocation toward the cost of our project in the amount up to $40,000.

The Fox River Trustees support the long-term recovery, protection, and enhancement of the natural resources of the Lower Fox River and Green Bay system. As part of this system, the Peshtigo River offers many opportunities for recreation including swimming, boating fishing and more. Kayaking as a recreational activity has grown in popularity, not only within our own community, but also to those that visit and vacation in our area as well. The Peshtigo River provides kayakers with an abundance of beauty in a pleasant natural environment throughout their journeys both and above and below the City of Peshtigo Dam.

Often the presence of those people that partake in kayaking provide an economic contribution to our area businesses, and in turn to our communities as a whole. Of equal importance it's also apparent that those same people consider the offerings of our community in that we also enjoy a great place not only to recreate but also a place to live and work.

Kayak access to the Peshtigo River currently involves riverbank side launches or existing boat launches, both are not favorable launch options as Kayak craft are low profile watercraft that require an extreme physical transition of placement from land to craft often in an unsafe manner to the boater, additionally there is even more difficulties for those with disabilities that enjoy the same kayaking opportunities we offer.

A special appreciation of continued support from our project partners, Peshtigo School District, City of Peshtigo, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Wild Goose River Kayak Group of the Peshtigo area, membership and especially the Peshtigo Area Chamber of Commerce board of directors.

The award of this grant is very encouraging, but the Chamber still needs the support of the community to achieve the goal of full funding for both the kayak launch and fishing pier.
