Improved Bulldog Grapplers Fight Hard but Fall to L/W/TL
Issue Date: December 22, 2020
Peshtigo was narrowly beaten by Laona/Wabeno/Three Lakes on the wrestling mats Friday, 36-28.
After a double forfeit at 106, Brady Shepard added to L/W/TL lead by pinning Cole Sherman in 24 seconds in the 113-pound weight class.
Peshtigo's strong part of the line up came with a Reese Yunke (120) pin of Kevin Sheldon in 3 minutes, 13 seconds and forfeit victories from Ethan Brissette (126) and Brendan Conn (132), giving Peshtigo 18 points in that stretch.
L/W/TL's big run came when Lucas Wanty (138) won by forfeit, Jesse Dupuis (145) pinned Joey Kopp in 3 minutes, 39 seconds and Piersson Czaplinski (152) pinned Kyle Rupert in 3:07. After a double forfeit at 160, the lead grew for L/W/TL following forfeit wins by Ryan Roy (170) and Zeke Logalbbo (182).
Peshtigo's Connor Thomas beat Frank Shepard by 12-0 major decision at 195 and Kody Klimek pinned Augustus Fink in 3:51 at 285. The 220 pound weight class was also a double forfeit.
Peshtigo was at full strength Friday for its second match of the year.
"It was great. We had a full team finally, so I got to see everybody wrestle," Peshtigo coach Kory Weed said. "We improved a lot from Lena, so that was good to see. Still obviously things to work on with it being such a short year, but we're getting to it."
Lena defeated Peshtigo 60-6 in the Bulldogs' first matchup of the year.
"Big improvements from two weeks ago against Lena, so we keep on moving forward and hopefully by the end of the year we'll be where we want to be," Weed said.
The teams also wrestled several exhibition matches on the day to stay sharp. Without exhibitions, teams would potentially only be wrestling six or seven matches over the course of a year, as teams can only wrestle once a week, with no tournaments.
"It's pretty tough to walk into a tournament at the end of the year with only that many matches when you're used to getting 30 to 40," Weed said.
