
Karen M. Schmidt Issue Date: December 29, 2020 Karen Margaret (Andersen) Schmidt, 68, of Plymouth, Wi. and Gilbert, Az., passed away Saturday, Dec. 19, 2020 at Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center after an almost 7 year battle with cancer. She never complained and continued to fight until the end.
Born Sept. 20, 1952 in Menominee, Mi., to the late James and Patricia Andersen of Marinette, she graduated from Marinette Catholic Central High School in 1971 and attended UW-Marinette. She then transferred to UW-Madison where she earned a BS degree in Communication Disorders in 1975. After that, she attended UW-Whitewater where she graduated in 1977 with a MS Degree in Speech Pathology.
She married Fred Schmidt on Aug. 14, 1976 and they enjoyed their time together for over 44 years. She had a passion for her career in assisting children improving their language and helping them to communicate clearly. She worked for over 40 years in school districts at the elementary school level. She started her career at the Wisconsin School for the Visually Impaired in Janesville and worked in school districts in Beloit, Harvard, Ill., Janesville and Manitowoc and ended her career in the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Elementary School in 2013.
After retirement, she volunteered at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Gilbert, Az. where she made many friendships. The rock of her family, they owe their success to her guidance and support. Her laugh brought joy to many and she had an interest in others and their "stories". An avid Wisconsin Badger fan, she loved to sing Varsity and was also a Green Bay Packer fan. She cherished her family and loved family time at Vintage and The Paddock Club (chicken parm) in Elkhart Lake, WI.
Survivors include her husband, Fred; a daughter, Krista (Daniel) Stalewski of Milwaukee; a son, Ryan (Megan) Schmidt of Plymouth; a brother, Jeffrey (Debbora) Andersen of Brown Deer; two grandchildren and a niece, Angela (Craig) Caliger of Newport Beach, Ca. and nephew, Adam (Lisa) Zoellner of Austin, Tx., who gave her much love and support.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her best friend, mentor and sister-in-law, Barbara Maschka.
Family and friends can visit with family at Suchon Funeral Home, 1317 State Road 67 in Plymouth on Saturday, Jan. 9 from noon to 2 p.m. A private service will be held for immediate family and invited guests. The service will be streamed and available to watch on the Suchon Funeral Home Facebook Page. Contributions to the family can be made to the Sheboygan County Palliative Care Organization to support their services.
