Crivitz Names Kostuch As Interim Police ChiefIssue Date: December 29, 2020 At a four-minute special meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 23, Crivitz Village Board officially voted to extend the advertisement for Police Chief applications on WileNet until 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 4, 2021, and to hire former Village President Kurt Kostuch as Interim Police Chief effective on Dec. 23, date of the meeting.
Both actions had been recommended by the board's Public Safety Committee after a long closed session for candidate interviews on Monday, Dec. 21. Kostuch appeared to be the only candidate to be interviewed in person that evening, and names of other candidates, if any, were not disclosed.
Present for the Dec. 23 meeting were Village President Jeff Dorschner; Trustees Stew Swanson, Amy Grandaw, Gloria Kainz, and Michael Strandt, along with Clerk/Treasurer Marilyn Padgett, and members of the public - Ray and Angie Majewski, Nick Lakari, and Ross Behrendt. Trustee Fred Franzen was absent. The meeting was called to order at 6 p.m. and adjourned at 6:04 p.m.
The motion to hire Kostuch included provisions that he is to be paid at the rate of $28 per hour, not to exceed 20 hours per week, also as recommended by the Public Safety Committee.
In a letter dated Monday, Nov. 30 current Interim Police Chief Randy Miller had informed the board that he was resigning the position effective Thursday, Dec. 31, and a special meeting was held on Nov. 30 for interviews, after which advertising on WileNet was begun to recruit and interview candidates for police chief position.
At the start of its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 15 the Village Board had accepted the resignation of Kostuch as Village President and elected Dorschner to temporarily replace him. Dorschner had agreed to serve only until the term expires on April 20, 2021, following the Spring elections on April 6. He has filed nomination papers for return to office in his trustee position.
The deadline for filing nomination papers for the April 6 election is Tuesday, Jan. 5, and so far Dorschner is the only official candidate. Franzen has filed a notice of non-candidacy. There are no announced candidates for other offices to be filled, which include trustee positions currently held by Franzen and Kainz as well as the Village President position vacated by Kostuch. Kainz is unofficially expected to seek return to her trustee position. As of Monday, Dec. 28 there were no known candidates for the trustee position Franzen is vacating, or for the office of Village President.
