Mary G. Torinus

Mary Glenn (Sharp) Torinus, passed away Friday, Jan. 8 in Egg Harbor after a long illness.

Born Oct. 24, 1938, the second of three children, to Donald and Becky Sharp in Green Bay, she graduated from Green Bay East High School in 1957 and from Stephens College in Columbia, Mo. in 1961. She cherished her college days and escapades with the lifelong friends she made there. As a child, she loved to dance and studied ballet.

In October of 1962, she crossed the Atlantic on the Queen Mary with friends KeeKee Minor and Abett Icks and they backpacked for a year, exploring Europe, Western Asia and Africa and hitched a ride up the Nile on a barge to Sudan. To extend her travels, she got a job in Berlin stapling boxes and also worked in a pickle factory in Amsterdam. She spoke about the adventures she experienced while sightseeing many places.

When she returned to the states in 1963, she worked as a secretary, first in Denver, Co. and then in Minneapolis, Mn. and also in Milwaukee as a window dresser for the Gimbels Department Store. While at Gimbels, she discovered a talent for gift wrapping, decorating and interior design.

She married Tom Torinus on May 29, 1965. In 1982, they each set out on spiritual paths that deepened their marriage for 55 years. They lived in Milwaukee, Green Bay, Menominee, Mi., Chicago, Ill. and Door County. She being a mother and was a natural mother and grandmother and always spoke about the joy it brought her. While her husband earned hid degrees in theology and pastoral counseling, she took a class in massage therapy. She studied for four years at the Lakeside School of Massage in Chicago where she earned her massage therapy license.

After moving to Door County, she worked as a massage therapist at the St. Joseph Retreat Center and at local spas and hotels until 2017. While in Door County, she discovered InterPlay, a practice of honoring the wisdom of the body through creative movement, vocal expression and storytelling and she trained under one of its founders and became an InterPlay leader and teacher. 

She volunteered wherever she lived, was a member of Milwaukee's Junior League, a Girl Scout troop leader in Menominee and also volunteered as a massage therapist in Door County for the free clinic and for the elderly at Hearthside and the Good Samaritan-Scandia Village.

She was a good swimmer and did laps at the YMCA, first in Menominee and later in Door County. She taught swimming at the YMCA in Menominee.

She enjoyed walking, hiking in the woods, especially the trails in Peninsula State Park, was a good hearted caretaker of everything in life and loved the beauty in animals, creatures and plants around her. A gifted listener, she was known for her gentleness and understanding as she uplifted, healed and comforted people.

She is survived by two daughters, Alexandra Torinus of Wauwatosa and Elizabeth Torinus (Dan Fredman) of Hartland; two grandchildren; brothers-in-law, John Torinus, Jr. (Caroline) of West Bend and Charles Torinus (Nancy) of Carbondale, Co.; sisters-in-law, Laurel Culp (Peter) of Bradenton, Fla., Nancy Neuman (Bill) of Portland, Or., Maryclaire Torinus of Brookfield and Shirley Sharp of Atlanta, Ga. and 16 nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Don Sharp and a sister, Stephanie Newell.

A Memorial Service and gathering will be held when COVID-19 allows, hopefully in summer in Door County.
