Lena School To Hold Summer School, Prom Issue Date: March 24, 2021 With Covid-19 vaccines now available and infection numbers going down, Lena School District will have summer school this year, and there may be a junior/senior prom in the big gym, probably on Saturday, May 22.
Plans for those activities were among items discussed at the school board meeting on Monday, March 15, along with the levy limit referendum on Tuesday, April 6, and hiring a principal to replace James Torzala, who is retiring at the end of the current school year.
District Administrator Ben Pytleski, who also serves as elementary principal, told the board a committee of teachers is being assembled to help with the hiring, and interviews will start after April 6. At the previous board meeting Pytleski reported there were 30 applications for that position.
Board members agreed the district will have Summer School this year. Options for activities, location and class sizes are bing considered.
The board approved resignation of Elementary Teacher Beth Zingler, effective at the end of the current school year on June 7.
Start College Now Classes for the fall of 2021 were unanimously approved as requested, and a long list of new and revised policies for the district were adopted as recommended.
Student Representative Kevin Chang reported on Saint Patrick's Day, Junior class ACT testing, and the Spaghetti Supper which was to be held on Thursday, March 18. There was no school on Friday, March 19. Spring sports start on Monday, April 19.
Virtual only Parent/Teacher Conferences will be on Wednesday, March 31.
All board members were present for the meeting. They are Charles Imig, Timothy A. Goldschmidt, Ed Huberty and David McNurlen, and Lori Dufek, board president.
Insurance Renewal for the 2021/2022 school year was approved as presented.
Pytleski reported 30 Covid vaccinations had been given on Friday, March 12.
He reminded the board that the Village of Lena will be celebrating its 100th year anniversary later this year.
St. Norbert College students will be coming in April to participate in the elementary School, and will continue doing so until May.
The district is looking into another van purchase.
Pytleski reported on a series of informational meetings on the school funding referendum to be decided at the polls on Tuesday, April 6. There had been meetings in the Town of Oconto and Town of Stiles, and another was scheduled for Tuesday, March 23 in the school cafeteria.
The referendum asks voters to allow the the district to exceed revenue limits for five years for non-recurring purposes connected mainly with various repairs and upgrades for technology and buildings.
Before the board voted unanimously in January to go forward with the referendum Pytleski had explained that no expansion is planned. Wording of the referendum allows the board to use the money to maintain district facilities and fund general operations and maintenance, rather than asking taxpayers to fund specific individual facility project needs.
He said there are continued HVAC upgrades to consider, continued technology upgrades, repairs and upgrades for two outdoor facilities, and he expects to spend part of the funds for the much needed remodeling of locker rooms.
In the referendum, voters are being asked to allow the board to adopt budgets that exceed the revenue limit specified in Wisconsin Statutes by $750,000 for the 2021-2022 school year; $800,000 for the 2022-2023 school year; $850,000 for the 2023-2024 school year; $900,000 for the 2024-2025 school year, and $950,000 for the 2025-2026 school year, for non-recurring purposes consisting of ongoing educational expenses and maintaining facilities.
