Panther Boys Win Small School Title at Freedom Invitational

Issue Date: September 2, 2021

Oconto Falls, Gillett, Coleman, Peshtigo and Marinette all competed at a wet and soggy Freedom Irish Waters Invite on Friday.

The course was covered in water from recent storms, making for an interesting first meet of the year for many teams, including Coleman, for whom it was also the first event of several runners' high school careers.

Coleman's boys were eighth overall, with senior Karson Casper leading the way in 16th place of all finishers on complete teams with a time of 18 minutes, 30.23 seconds. That was good for sixth of small school runners. Freshman Isaiah Nowak was 20th in the small school standings (20:27.72), juniors John Nowak and Ray LeMieux were 22nd and 26th, respectively (20:30.15, 20:57.63) and freshmen Tyler Rennie took 28th in 21:02.15. Conner Markiewicz was 50th (25:51.63).

The Coleman girls were 14th of all schools at the event. Senior Desiree Nowak was 17th of 61 small school runners, which doesn't include runners from the large schools (23:34.49), junior Corrin Liptak took 22nd (24:12.62), senior Sara Seefeldt placed 29th (24:46.79), sophomore Kiersten Jensen was 34th (25:11.38) and junior Sylvia Fochesato came in 53rd (28:46.67).

"I was very pleased with our first performance of the season, especially considering the course was under several inches of water in most places," Coleman coach Becky Chaltry said. "We have lots of new faces this year and have a full varsity girls and boys team, so it's been a great start so far."

Peshtigo did not qualify for a team score, with just four runners. In the small school rankings, senior Sydney Lund was sixth (22:04.86). Freshman Holly Pesch was ninth of 61 small school runners, finishing in 22:27.74.

Peshtigo's boys were led by junior Andrew Nelson, who placed fifth of small school runners with a time of 18:06.27). Senior Logan Smith was not far behind in seventh (18:51.19), sophomore Reese Yunke took 18th (20:17.57) and junior Cole Grabian took 31st (21:09.13).

Senior Arikka Carrol was 45th (27:11.77) and Alaina Archambault took 52nd (28:29.68).

Oconto Falls' boys were fifth in the overall field, with senior Joe Adams fourth of 51 small-school runners (17:37.72). Freshman Ben Adams took eighth in 18:55.63), freshman Griffin Kopke was 11th (19:26.55), senior Grant Yuma was 13th (19:44.77), freshman Emerson Rice was 30th (21:07.64) and freshman Brant Laluzerne was 32nd (21:24.83).

Oconto Falls' girls took ninth overall and third of nine small schools. Sophomore Hannah Ludemann was eighth of 61 small school runners after finishing in 22:26.24, freshman Brooke Hodkiewicz was 10th (22:28.61), freshman Hailey Delzer took 19th (23:42.09), sophomore Maddy Przybylski took 28th (24:32.45), freshman Ava Hodkiewicz was 38th (25:51.97), junior Sydney Bell was 39th (25:53.67) and junior Brooke Senn came in 56th (30:53.97).

Gillett's boys were sixth overall, led by small school winner Alex Peterson. The junior bested the field of 51 small school runners and took second overall with a time of 17:01.05. Junior Evan Peterson was sixth overall and third of small school runners at 17:34.20. Senior Connor Hanson was 10th of small-schoolers (19:15.56), freshman Scott Herroux took 37th (22:13.27), freshman Zander Davis took 46th (23:32.8) and sophomore Virgil Herzog placed 51st (29:50.21).

Of 51 large school runners, senior Ava Dahlman was 21st (22:48.71), senior Molly Knutson took 31st (23:31.2), senior Hadley Reines was 35th (23:46.25), freshman Addison Lacy took 45th (24:45.82), junior Karissa Valitchka came in 49th (27:11.46) and freshman Lauren Sadowski was 50th (31:00.81).

Kaukauna won both the girls and boys team events. Winneconne was second of the boys' teams and Freedom was second amongst girls teams.
