Peshtigo School Replaces Old Unrepairable Boiler

Issue Date: November 17, 2021

At the Peshtigo School Board meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 10, the Board was tasked with approving a $50,000 purchase for a new boiler that exceeded its life span after being repaired many times and was recently deemed unrepairable.

In his Administrators report Patrick Rau announced that one of the boilers was shut down at the Middle / High School. Director of Buildings, Grounds and Transportation, Brian Williams went over the plan to replace the burner and controls at a cost of $50,000. Williams added "We had Tweet Garrett, that always does repairs to our boilers come in and they confirmed there was a gas leak and that is what originally brought them in. Tweet Garrett assessed the boiler to find out that the boiler is deemed unrepairable. With going down to one boiler and winter coming upon us, Rau exercised his authority and approved an emergency purchase for one new boiler. The old boiler parts may be able to be used if need be for repairs of the boiler at the PELC (Peshtigo Elementary Learning Center).

The board approved one resignation of Robin Gilligan as the Varsity Volleyball Coach. Also approved was the designation of Lance Pesch to act as interim Co-head Coach for the 2021-2022 Varsity Girls Basketball season in the absence of Bruce Parkovich. Assistant Principal Bill Wickman announced that Parkovich won't be able to coach due to illness and they are hoping for him to come back by January. Rob Lund was approved as Volunteer Assistant Varsity Coach for the 2021 - 2022 Varsity Girls Basketball season.

Donations for October included $10,000 from PHS Alumni Association for a reading program; $376.62 from Eagle Express spirit pump; $1,000 for the Girls Soccer Association from M&M Foundation; $2,000 for Skills USA from Waupaca Foundry and $4,990 to be used for a 3-D printer for the PELC donated by Kevin Vidas of NKS Tire.

Per state mandates, Evacuation / Safety Drill Evaluation Reports and District Safety / Crisis Plans are required for all buildings and have to be reviewed and approved every year per state statutes.

Assistant Principal Bill Wickman stated they ran the annual Alice training as required by the stated, and used the telephone system with dispatch, had all the teachers discuss what they would do in each situation, what exits would be used, and how they would exit the building. With Covid, they were unable to leave the building to go to an off site facility as they normally would.

Vice President Steve Coble spoke in regards to the Building and Grounds update saying, "The committee did meet and we came up with a project list for Fund 46". Rau added, "Williams will be putting the finishing touches on that list and will share his findings at the Dec. 12 meeting".

Treasurer Gary Larson in his report mentioned that they met with Jeff Cate, the owner of the property that the district is looking at for possible purchase, located between the Museum and the high school parking lot. Consideration of the purchase of real estate was further discussed in closed session. Also discussed in closed session was review of Administrative/ Director contract review. No action was taken on either item.

The District is seeking public input at an open to the public community meeting on Wednesday Nov. 17 at 5 p.m. for the ESSER III relief fund grant which is part of the process of ESSER I and ESSER II funding from the Federal Stimulus money. ESSER (Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief) is a part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

The rules are different with this amount of money, they want to make sure that all community stakeholders have the opportunity to provide their input. A survey was sent out to parents, the community meeting will be held and then a plan will be developed to bring to the Board. All Community Members, Parents, Students and Staff are invited to attend and provide input on how the District could spend its funds to respond to the safety and learning needs of the students. Esser III is for addressing learning loss, provide evidence based summer learning programs and enrichment, and provide after school activities.

With Esser I, local education agencies received sub grants to address the impacts COVID-19 has had on K12 students, educators and families. Esser II funds were used to support teaching and learning in response to the impact of COVID-19 such as paying for teachers to engage in remote instruction and for substitutes to cover classes for teachers who are absent due to COVID-19 exposure. Uses for the funds include accelerating learning recovery, address the social and emotional wellbeing of students and staff, re-engaging students and families who were disconnected from the K-12 Eduction system and supporting educator access to Real-time data to implement personalized instruction.

There were two items identified for the December meeting, Review of Policies and Superintendent Raus'' mid year review.

The next board meeting will be held Wednesday, Dec. 8.
