Bill Blair's Letter to the Editor

Issue Date: June 16, 2022

Bill Blair

Dear Editor:

I have worked for over 50 years in the American economic system to provide for my family and have retired with some financial security. I am the descendent of British, French, Scottish and Irish (United Kingdom) ancestors and believe that other immigrants deserve a fair chance. So do 70% of my fellow Americans. Therefore the American majority (We the People) are speaking. Let's be sure that our American immigration policy reflects this and welcomes the new Americans home.

These new Americans are escaping from places where there are fewer freedoms, less life quality and less political choice and where the politics prohibit opposing parties and amend their constitutions to stay in power and hoard all the wealth. Many of these refugees are escaping from countries with single party dictatorships that dominate their governments, make oppressive laws, spread propaganda, control elections, and only offer single candidates.

In America we work for it, share it, and argue against those who hoard it. We don't all live for one. We all live for each other. We don't stem immigration. We manage it for the benefit of our American economic needs and the immigrant's safety and independence needs. This process meets our mutually beneficial needs and honors our ancestors.

The concept of "closed borders' is ridiculous when considering our current labor shortage and growing economy. This concept will torpedo our economy which is on the verge of entering a new European/Asian market that is demanding our partnership. "Closed borders' will reduce America to an impotent version of its former economic self.

We must nurture our economy with the life-giving transfusion of "new blood' by embracing diversity and welcoming our future Americans who are coming here with a wonderful bargain. They are ready to trade their intelligence, determination, and family centered values for American citizenship. This is an echo of our ancestor's willingness to survive, succeed, and contribute to the "greater good' of our humanitarian democratic American culture. We all benefit. We all succeed.

To deny immigration is to deny our American future. Our American strength is based upon the fact that we are a complex mixture of the world's cultures, politics, philosophies and religions. In fact our entire American government grew from this mixture to produce our declaration of independence, constitution, bill of rights, and the following amendments and precedent setting cases forming our rule of law which states that every citizen is innocent until proven guilty by a jury of peers. We didn't do this by operating a nationalist government. We did this by operating an international government nurtured by immigrants that arrived with their democratic ideas looking for fertile ground from which to sprout.

Our American government is currently working on an upgrade to immigration that includes amnesty judges, strict screening for criminality and disease, a thorough citizenship integration program including work visas until full citizenship and a working English-speaking skill is achieved. This concludes with new working and tax paying American citizens. We need them. They need us.

Let's stop insulting our ancestors with a "closed border' argument. Let's stop eroding our American economy with petty politics. Let's be sure to welcome our new American neighbor's home with open arms.

Bill Blair,

Menominee
